It’s so embarrassing. Recently, I compiled a high-frequency vocabulary list for learning Spanish on my own , focusing on everyday scenarios. I’m sharing it with you all, hoping it can help others who are struggling with their vocabulary. This list isn’t exhaustive, but it’s incredibly practical—it’s the best of what I’ve learned from my own mistakes! Supermarket Shopping The supermarket is a fantastic place to practice your speaking skills! But first, you need to know what all the different items are called. Otherwise, you’ll just be pointing at a pile of vegetables, unable to say much more than “este” and “ese.” For anyone doing self-study Spanish , these practical words are a must. Here are some basic but crucial words: Meats : ternera, cerdo, pollo, cordero Seafood : pescado, gambas, calamares Fruits & Veggies : fresa, plátano, lechuga, cebolla Other : pan, leche, huevos, aceite, carrito, bolsa Ordering at a Restaurant Ordering at a restaurant is another challenge. Not recognizing most of the words on the menu, I always end up ordering the only thing I know, paella . It feels like I’m missing out on a million amazing dishes! Learning the following words will help you confidently try new things, especially if you’re learning Spanish on your own . English Spanish Context/Notes Menu La carta / El menú El menú usually refers to a set menu (menu of the day). Appetizer / Starter Entrante / Primer plato The first course of a typical Spanish meal. Main Course Plato principal / Segundo plato The second course, usually meat or fish. Dessert Postre After-dinner treat, like a flan. The bill / check La cuenta When you’re ready to pay, say “La cuenta, por favor.” I’m allergic to… Soy alérgico/a a… This is extremely important! Especially for those with nut allergies.
