Shortly after moving to Spain, I realized that language is the biggest initial hurdle. Although I enrolled in a language school, self-study and reinforcement after class are super important. I was organizing my bookshelf recently and realized how many books I’ve gone through, from A1 to my current B2 level. Today, I’d like to share some of the Spanish learning books I’ve found to be exceptionally great, hoping to help fellow self-learners on their journey!
Classic Textbook Series
When it comes to textbooks, Sueña and Aula Internacional are standard choices for most language schools. I personally prefer the Aula series; its layout and content design are more modern, and the topics are more relevant to daily life, making it less boring to study. For instance, it discusses topics like ordering food with an app or renting an apartment online, which is very practical. However, Sueña provides a more solid explanation of the grammar system, which is great for students who like to dig deep into grammar. Using both together can be doubly effective!

Mastering Grammar
If you feel grammar is your weak point, then the Uso de la gramática española series, available in beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, is a must-have. This book is basically the bible of grammar! The left page explains a grammar point, and the right page has corresponding exercises, making it very well-organized. I usually do the exercises immediately after learning a grammar point to reinforce my memory. It explains difficult concepts like the subjunctive mood and the differences between past tenses very clearly. The downside is that it can be a bit dry since it’s purely for drilling, but it’s incredibly useful for solidifying your grammar.
Essential Tools for DELE Prep
For those preparing for the DELE exam, the El Cronómetro and Preparación al DELE series are absolute essentials. I used El Cronómetro, which is great because it has a ton of mock exams and provides detailed tips on exam techniques and time management. A month before the exam, I did one practice test daily to get used to the rhythm, which made me feel much more confident on the actual test day. I recommend choosing the book that corresponds to your target level for focused training.
I’ve put together a simple table to summarize the features of these books and who they’re best for, making it easier for you to choose.
| Book Title | Key Features | Best For |
| Aula Internacional | Engaging content, relevant to daily life | Beginners of all levels, language school students |
| Uso de la gramática española | Clear grammar explanations, plenty of exercises | Students needing systematic grammar reinforcement |
| El Cronómetro | Numerous DELE mock exams, strong focus on test-taking strategies | Candidates preparing for the DELE exam |
| Sueña | Traditional and solid grammar structure | Learners who enjoy in-depth grammar analysis for their self-study Spanish journey |
These are my personal thoughts based on my own experience; everyone’s learning style is different, so your experience might vary. Feel free to share your favorite Spanish books as well. Let’s learn and grow together! ¡Mucho ánimo a todos!
