Hello everyone, I’ve been a lurker on this forum for a while. Seeing so many people discussing learning Spanish, I wanted to start a post to share my experience of self-studying and passing the DELE B2 last year. I hope this can be a little helpful for those on the same path. I’m no language genius; I got through it with sheer perseverance, so my self-study method for DELE might be more suitable for the average person.

Preparation Before You Start
First, you need to be clear about one thing: the DELE exam is not the same as the Spanish we use in daily life. It’s more academic, more formal, and especially tests your comprehensive abilities. So, don’t think you can easily pass just because you’ve lived in Spain for a long time and speak fluently. I made this mistake at the beginning and was completely crushed by my first practice test. So, having the right mindset is the first step! After deciding to take the exam, the first thing to do is to visit the official Cervantes Institute website to understand the exam structure, dates, and registration process. Get a clear picture of what’s ahead.
Choosing Core Resources
There are all sorts of materials on the market, but you really don’t need to buy them all; it will only increase your anxiety. For me, these were the only core resources that were truly useful:
- Textbook: The Preparación al DELE series. This is the official recommended textbook and is essential! I used it from B1 to B2. If you thoroughly master the exercises inside, you’re basically halfway there.
- Practice Tests: El Cronómetro. This series is mainly for mock exams. Start doing them intensively about a month before the exam. Stick strictly to the time limits,
don’t use your phone halfway through, as simulating the real exam environment is crucial.
- Vocabulary: I didn’t specifically use a vocabulary book. I mainly collected new words I encountered in reading and listening exercises into a notebook. I’d review it daily; memorizing words in context is much more effective.
Techniques for Each Section
The DELE is divided into four parts: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. You have to pass each section to pass the whole exam. My strategy was to solidify my strengths and focus heavily on my weaknesses. For example, my reading was relatively good, so I made sure to score high in that area. My speaking was weaker, so I spent the most time preparing for it.
| Exam Section | My Preparation Focus |
| **Comprensión de lectura ** | Do past papers, analyze mistakes, and accumulate synonyms. |
| **Comprensión auditiva ** | Listen to RTVE news broadcasts repeatedly, watch Spanish TV series. |
| **Expresión e interacción escritas ** | Prepare writing templates for different topics, especially for letters and opinion essays. |
| **Expresión e interacción orales ** | Find a language partner to practice with, or talk to yourself in the mirror, and go over all the common topics. |
Finally, I want to say that preparing for the DELE is a marathon, especially for those of us studying alone. It’s easy to feel lonely and bored. Therefore, finding a study group or a language partner to keep each other accountable and motivated is very important. We can also communicate more on the forum! I wish everyone success in getting the certificate they want. ¡Ánimo a todos!
