Lately, there have been more and more posts on the forum about master’s applications, so it feels like application season is upon us once again. Seeing all the different questions everyone has, I thought I’d start a new thread to consolidate the lessons I learned and the pitfalls I encountered during my own application process. I’ll focus specifically on the non-negotiable requirements for applying to an official master’s degree in Spain. I hope this helps any prospective students who are feeling a bit lost!

Core Requirements Explained
1. Language Proficiency
This is definitely the first hurdle. The vast majority of master’s programs taught in Spanish explicitly require applicants to have a B2 level of proficiency. This B2 level can be certified by a DELE B2 certificate or a SIELE B2 certificate. Some universities might accept a language level certificate from the Cervantes Institute, but DELE and SIELE are the most widely recognized. If you’re applying for a program taught in English, the typical requirement is an IELTS score of around 6.5 or a TOEFL score of about 90. Don’t even think about applying with just an A2 level; you’ll have virtually no chance.
2. Academic Background
To apply for a master’s, you must first hold a bachelor’s degree and a graduation certificate from your home country. This is the most basic prerequisite. In addition, there is a very important document known as a “certificate of eligibility for master’s studies.” This certificate needs to be issued by your undergraduate institution, confirming that you are qualified to pursue postgraduate studies in your home country. This document is crucial for the subsequent degree recognition (homologación) process, and many universities will require it during the application phase, in addition to other key qualifications like your Spanish university language exams results.
3. Average Grade (GPA)
Your GPA is extremely important
! While Spanish universities don’t have strict GPA cutoffs like those in the UK or the US, your academic transcript is the primary evidence admissions officers use to evaluate your academic ability. A strong average grade, especially high marks in your major-related courses, will be a significant advantage. For popular programs at top universities like the Complutense University of Madrid and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where many applicants are also dealing with Spanish language exams for university students
, admissions are highly competitive. Officers will undoubtedly select the best candidates, and your Nota Media (average grade) will be the most important measure of your academic strength.
4. Application Checklist
Besides the three core requirements mentioned above, you’ll need to prepare a host of other documents. I’ve compiled a general checklist for your reference, but always remember to check the official website of your target university for specific requirements.
| Document Name | Spanish Name | Notes |
| Passport | Pasaporte | Full-page scan |
| Language Proficiency Certificate | Certificado de Idioma | DELE/SIELE/IELTS/TOEFL |
| Degree and Graduation Certificates | Título y Certificado de Graduación | Requires translation and notarization/legalization |
| University Academic Transcript | Expediente Académico | Requires translation and notarization/legalization |
| Certificate of Eligibility for Master’s Studies | Certificado de Acceso a Máster | Requires translation and notarization/legalization |
| CV (Curriculum Vitae) | Curriculum Vitae | European standard format usually required (e.g., Europass) |
| Motivation Letter | Carta de Motivación | Very important, explains your motivation for applying |
| Letter(s) of Recommendation | Carta de Recomendación | 1-2 letters, from professors or internship supervisors |
That’s pretty much the gist of it. The preparation process can be tedious, but if you take it one step at a time and get all your documents in order, it’s not as daunting as it seems. If you have any specific questions during your application process, feel free to discuss them in this thread. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you all get the offers you’re dreaming of!
