I recently had the chance to visit the Cantabria region in northern Spain and made a special trip to see the legendary headquarters of Banco Santander. I’d always seen Santander branches on the streets of Madrid, but seeing its ‘hometown’ in person was truly impressive.

The Banco Santander headquarters building is more affectionately known by locals as ‘La Llama’ (The Flame) because of its unique red facade and irregular shape, which looks like a burning flame in the sunlight, making it highly recognizable. It’s not located in the busiest part of the city center but sits along the seaside promenade, right next to the famous Centro Botín. These two landmarks, one behind the other, are incredibly modern and add a touch of avant-garde flair to the classic city of Santander. The building was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano, and his name alone makes it worth a special visit.
Although it’s an office building for the bank, it’s not completely inaccessible to tourists. The public spaces outside the building are open, allowing you to admire the architectural details up close. The entire complex is actually a huge campus, officially named Ciudad Financiera Grupo Santander, located in Boadilla del Monte, on the outskirts of Madrid. However, what we typically see in the city of Santander is its iconic historic headquarters and the site of its cultural foundation. I’ve heard the interior working environment is fantastic, filled with greenery and art, but unfortunately, it’s not open to the general public, which is a small regret.
Visitor Tips
If you’re also planning a trip to Santander, a city where Banco Santander has its roots, I highly recommend visiting the headquarters and the Centro Botín together. The two places are a short walk apart. You could first visit the art center to see an exhibition (and while on the topic of the bank, you can read about Santander Bank’s profits), then relax at a seaside café before heading over to the bank headquarters for some photos. The scenery in this area is absolutely stunning, with modern architecture on one side and the blue Bay of Santander on the other.
