Having recently arrived in Spain and settled in, I had some spare cash and started thinking about where to deposit it. It’s not as straightforward as what I’m used to, where you can easily find investment products through various apps and services like Ingenico; here, I found things to be quite complex. I visited a few brick-and-mortar banks, but the procedures seemed complicated, or the new customer offers were a bit confusing. Then, a friend mentioned ING, so I checked out their website. It looked quite interesting, and I wanted to share my findings and discuss them with everyone.

Cuenta Naranja or Depósito Bienvenida?
The two products at ING that caught my eye were their classic savings account, Cuenta Naranja, and their welcome offer fixed-term deposit, Depósito Bienvenida. I looked into both, and the differences are quite clear.
- Cuenta Naranja: This is essentially a high-interest savings account. You can deposit and withdraw money at any time, with no lock-in period, offering great flexibility. The interest rate is variable and moves with the European Central Bank’s rates. For people like us who might need access to their money at any time after opening an ING account, it seems very user-friendly—at least it’s better than letting your money gather dust in a standard current account with ING Bank.
- Depósito Bienvenida: This is a special offer for new customers, essentially a fixed-term deposit. The funds you deposit will earn a fixed annual interest rate, much higher than the savings account, for a set period. At maturity, the principal and interest are automatically transferred back to your savings account. The downside is that you can’t touch this money during the term, making it suitable for those who have a lump sum of money they are certain they won’t need in the short term.
How to Choose? It Depends on Your Needs
I was a bit torn because I wanted both flexibility and high returns. So, I made a simple comparison table to help me decide, and I’m sharing it with you all for reference:
| Feature | Cuenta Naranja | Depósito Bienvenida |
| Fund Liquidity | High, deposit/withdraw anytime | Low, locked in for the term |
| Interest Rate Type | Variable rate | Fixed rate |
| Best For | People who need a flexible emergency fund and are unsure when they’ll need the money. | People with a specific amount of idle funds they won’t touch. |
| Ease of Use | Very simple, just transfer funds in. | A one-time setup when opening, then matures automatically. |
In the end, my choice was to put most of my money into the Cuenta Naranja and set aside a smaller portion for a short-term Depósito Bienvenida as a form of forced savings. This way, I maintain daily liquidity while also earning some decent interest. I’m curious, how do you all save money in Spain? Have you used ING or have other good bank recommendations? Feel free to share your experiences! 💰
