When I first arrived in Spain, one of the biggest headaches was dealing with bank accounts. It was painful to see mysterious administration and transfer fees deducted every month. After some trial and error and research, I finally found a few truly “free” banks. Today, I’m sharing my findings to help anyone still struggling with bank fees.

Digital Banks: The Top Choice for the Younger Generation
These are my primary accounts now; convenience and speed are their biggest advantages.
N26
This German online bank provides a Spanish IBAN, so it works perfectly here. The standard account is completely free, with no monthly or maintenance fees. Their app is excellent—clean interface and smooth operation. The entire account opening process is online and can be completed in minutes, ideal for those who prefer to avoid hassle. The downside is the lack of physical branches, making cash deposits inconvenient. You have to do it through partner supermarkets, and there are fees for this service, similar to other Spanish bank fees.
Revolut
Another popular digital bank that offers a free standard account. Revolut’s biggest advantage is currency exchange; their rates are excellent, making it a game-changer for people who frequently make international transfers or travel. The app is also packed with features, including options to buy stocks and cryptocurrencies. However, be aware that the free account has a monthly limit on ATM withdrawals, and you’ll be charged for exceeding it.
‘Free’ Options from Traditional Banks
Some people might feel more secure with traditional banks for things like Spanish bank transfers and to avoid other Spanish bank fees. The good news is that they also offer fee-free accounts, although usually with some conditions attached. Examples include BBVA’s Cuenta Online Sin Comisiones and Santander’s Cuenta Online Santander. These accounts typically require you to be a new customer and to perform all operations online. If you need to visit a branch for service, you might be charged. Always read the T&C carefully before opening an account to ensure you meet all the conditions for fee waivers.
Here’s a quick summary of the features of the free accounts I’ve personally used, to help you compare and choose.
| Bank | Account Type | Key Advantages | Things to Note |
| N26 | Standard | Completely free, great app experience | Inconvenient for cash deposits |
| Revolut | Standard | Excellent exchange rates, feature-rich | Free ATM withdrawal limit |
| BBVA | Cuenta Online | Major traditional bank, many branches | Fee-free for online operations only |
| Santander | Cuenta Online | Well-established, wide network | Also an online account, branch services are charged |
There’s no single perfect bank, only the one that’s best for you. If you primarily use online payments and transfers, N26 and Revolut are more than enough. If you still need occasional access to a physical branch, consider opening an online account with a traditional bank as a backup. I hope my sharing helps! Wishing you all fee-free banking soon!
