Having recently arrived in Spain, I’ve had to get various types of certificates from the bank for different procedures. After some research, I discovered that most of them can be easily requested through the BBVA app, which is incredibly convenient. I’m sharing my experience for anyone who might need it.
Why Do You Need a Bank Certificate?
These documents are quite useful for many things. For example, when renewing your residency permit, the immigration office requires a proof of funds certificate to verify your financial situation. Similarly, if you’re renting an apartment or applying for a loan, you might be asked for a [proof of income] or a bank statement to demonstrate your financial stability. Another common one is the proof of account ownership, which is often required by utility companies when you want to set up direct debits for bills like electricity or your phone plan, to confirm that the account belongs to you.

Online Application Steps: It’s Super Easy!
I used to think that getting these documents meant waiting in long lines at a branch, but BBVA’s online system is actually excellent. You can do it through both the mobile app and the website. I used the app and found it more user-friendly. The process for getting a [bank statement certificate] is basically as follows:
- Log in to your BBVA mobile app or online banking website.
- On the main screen, find and select your account.
- On the account details page, look for a menu option, usually in the top-right corner or at the bottom, and tap on it.
- In the menu that appears, find the option named “Certificados”.
- Once you tap on it, the system will ask you to choose the type of certificate you need. Select the one you want, confirm the details like the date range, and the system will automatically generate a PDF document with the bank’s official stamp and signature. You can download it directly to your phone or send it to your email. Just print it out, and it’s ready to use. It’s very efficient!
| Certificate Type | Spanish Name | Main Purpose |
| Proof of Funds / Balance | Certificado de Saldo | Residency renewal, visa, proof of assets |
| Proof of Account Ownership | Certificado de Titularidad | Setting up direct debits for services |
| Bank Statement | Extracto de Movimientos | Proof of income, loan applications, rental screening |
| IBAN Certificate | Certificado de IBAN | Confirming International Bank Account Number |
The whole process takes less than five minutes, and you get an official document. It’s so much easier than struggling with the language barrier at the counter. The only thing to note is that for some very complex certificates or those requiring a specific format, you might still need to visit a branch to get a [proof of account ownership], but 90% of standard requests can be handled online. I hope this little guide helps everyone out, so you won’t have to worry about getting these certificates anymore!
