Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve been using my card from back home, but it’s not very convenient and the fees are high. So, I’ve been researching local banks to open an account. I looked into major local banks like BBVA and Santander, but then a friend mentioned HSBC. As a major international bank, I figured it might be more friendly to foreigners like us. I did some homework and wanted to share my findings. I also welcome anyone who has experience with them to add their thoughts.

HSBC’s Positioning in Spain
First, it’s important to understand that HSBC’s positioning in Spain is quite different from local banks like Santander or CaixaBank. You won’t find their branches and ATMs on every street corner. In Spain, HSBC focuses more on corporate banking, investment banking, and wealth management. To put it simply, its main clients are companies and high-net-worth individuals. I found that they have offices in major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia, but these don’t function as the typical retail banking branches we’re used to.
Is it Possible to Open a Personal Account?
So, can an average person open an account with HSBC in Spain? The answer is: It’s difficult, but not entirely impossible.
HSBC’s personal banking services are mainly Premier and Private Banking. This means there’s a high threshold for opening an account. Based on my research, you typically need to meet one of the following criteria:
- Maintain a certain amount in deposits or investments within the global HSBC system.
- Have a stable and high monthly salary deposited into an HSBC account.
So, if you’re already an HSBC Premier client in your home country or elsewhere, you can easily open a Premier account in Spain via their ‘Global Transfer’ service and enjoy global benefits. This makes processes like managing [Spanish bank transfers] much smoother. But if you’re a brand-new customer trying to open a standard account directly at HSBC Spain, you’ll likely be politely declined.
Pros and Cons of HSBC Spain
I’ve summarized the pros and cons of using HSBC in Spain for eligible clients:
| Pros | Cons |
| Globally linked accounts, convenient for fund transfers. | Very few physical branches, inconvenient for daily transactions. |
| Good possibility of multilingual customer support. | Limited ATM network; withdrawals from non-HSBC Spain ATMs may incur fees. |
| Familiar with the needs of international clients, more globalized service. | High entry threshold, not suitable for average savers. |
| Investment products are closely linked to global markets. | More focused on investment rather than daily consumer banking. |
If your main purpose is daily life in Spain—like grocery shopping, paying utility bills, etc.—then local or online banks like BBVA, Santander, or ING are likely more practical and convenient than HSBC in Spain. However, if you have global asset allocation needs, are already an HSBC client, and require a bank that connects you globally, then HSBC Spain is definitely an option worth considering. Are there any seasoned members on this forum who use HSBC in Spain? I’d love to hear about your actual experiences, especially regarding the service and the mobile app.
