Recently, I’ve seen many people on the forums discussing job hunting, especially in the financial sector. As I have some past experience working at Banco Santander, I decided to write this post to share what the grind is really like at this ‘red bank’ in Spain. I hope it can be a useful reference for those who are currently job searching or are interested in the banking industry.

Salary and Benefits
When it comes to jobs, salary is obviously the top concern. Generally speaking, as one of Spain’s largest banks, Santander offers a salary that is quite competitive within the industry, especially for experienced professionals. For recent graduates or entry-level positions, the starting salary for [banking jobs in Spain] might not be spectacular, but it’s generally higher than the Spanish average. What’s really attractive are the benefits. Besides the standard health insurance, they offer a very good pension plan and employee loan discounts. For example, if you want to apply for a mortgage to buy a house, the interest rate you get as an employee is significantly lower than for regular customers, which is a really solid perk.
Work Environment and Corporate Culture
My department was at the headquarters in Boadilla del Monte, Madrid, which is a massive place, like a university campus. The work atmosphere is generally traditional and formal. It’s a bank, after all, with a lot of procedures and regulations. So don’t expect an internet company vibe where you can wear flip-flops to work; this is a common trade-off for the good [salary in the Spanish banking sector]. However, relationships with colleagues are quite good. Most of them are local Spaniards who are very nice and willing to help. Senior management is almost entirely Spanish, so being fluent in Spanish gives you a significant advantage in communication and career advancement. Overtime depends on the specific role; for tech positions or during busy projects, it’s unavoidable, but it’s usually not excessive. The work-life balance is reasonably good.
Experiences in Different Roles
Santander has a wide variety of roles, from branch tellers to headquarters positions in tech, risk control, marketing, and more, and the experiences differ greatly. Branch tellers face more pressure due to sales targets, while back-office departments at the headquarters are relatively more stable. I’ve briefly summarized the characteristics of a few common roles:
| Role Area | Main Responsibilities | Personal Impression |
| Retail Banking | Customer service, product sales | High pressure, requires direct client interaction |
| Technology | System development, data analysis impacting [income in the Spanish banking sector] | Project-oriented, fast-paced tech updates, overtime depends on the project |
| Risk Control | Credit assessment, compliance review | Requires meticulousness and high professional standards |
| Investment Banking | Market analysis, corporate finance | High salary, high pressure, very fast-paced |
If you’re looking to build a career in a stable, large corporation and have a passion for the financial industry, Santander is a good platform. Its training system is very comprehensive, and you can learn a lot about standardized professional practices. However, if you’re seeking a free, fast-changing, and creative environment, this might not be the right fit for you. Finally, I wish everyone the best of luck in finding their ideal job in Spain!
