I recently moved to Barcelona, and getting a bank card was my top priority. Many friends had recommended N26, saying it’s very foreigner-friendly and has a fantastic app. I decided to give it a try and was surprised by how smoothly the entire process went—I was done in about half an hour! Preparations Before Opening an Account
Since N26 is an online bank, every step is done on its mobile app, making the preparation quite simple. The most crucial document is your proof of identity, which can be a Spanish residence card (TIE) or an EU passport. I used my brand-new TIE card. Before you apply, make sure your ID is valid.
You will need the following items:

The entire flow is very clear, just follow the app’s instructions step-by-step, and it’s almost impossible to go wrong.
Download and Register: Search for “N26” in your app store and download it. Once open, select “Spain” as your country and fill in your basic personal information, such as name, date of birth, nationality, email, phone number, and address. The address you provide here must be accurate, as your physical card will be mailed to it.
Choose Your Account Type: N26 offers several account types. For international transfers, you’ll use the N26 SWIFT / BIC code. I chose the basic N26 Standard plan, which is completely free with no management fees and is perfectly sufficient for daily use. You can choose based on your needs; for example, if you travel frequently, you might want to check out the paid You or Metal plans.
Video Identity Verification: This is the most critical step. After submitting your information, the app will guide you to a video verification call. A customer service representative will speak with you, asking you to show your TIE/NIE card or passport and follow their instructions to confirm the document’s authenticity and that it’s you. The representative may speak Spanish or English; you can choose your preference. The whole process takes about 5-10 minutes. I had a great experience—the agent was very patient.
Wait and Activate: After the video verification, you’ll receive an email within minutes notifying you that your account has been successfully opened! You can then log into the app. The physical card will be mailed to your address in a few days; I received mine in about 4 days. Once you get the card, activate it in the app by entering the 10-digit number on it, and then you can set your PIN.
Personal User Experience
After using it for a while, I feel the N26 app is incredibly well-designed. Every transaction sends a real-time notification, making my finances crystal clear. It also supports Bizum, which is super convenient for transferring money to local friends. Plus, it provides a Spanish IBAN, which is crucial for living in Spain—it works seamlessly for everything from signing mobile contracts to paying utility bills. This is unlike some other digital banks that don’t provide a local IBAN, which can cause some trouble.
