When I first arrived in Spain, I hadn’t received my NIE yet, but you need a bank card for almost everything, especially for renting an apartment or getting a phone plan. I had seen many posts online saying you can’t get a card without an NIE, which made me really anxious. However, I tried it myself last week and I successfully opened an account with just my passport! So, I wanted to share my experience right away to give some peace of mind to others in the same situation.
Why is it possible to open an account without an NIE?
The key is to apply for a “non-resident account”. Many bank employees will immediately turn you down when they hear you don’t have an NIE because they assume you’re applying for a standard resident account. Therefore, when you go to the bank, you must proactively and clearly state that you want to open a Cuenta no residente. This type of account is specifically designed for people like us who temporarily lack Spanish identification. While there might be some account maintenance fees, it’s definitely worth it as a temporary solution.
Which Bank Did I Choose?
I visited several banks, including Santander and CaixaBank, but ultimately succeeded at BBVA. I felt that BBVA was more familiar with the process for opening non-resident accounts, and the staff member was quite patient. At Santander, the teller told me directly it wasn’t possible, while at CaixaBank, they made me wait a long time and seemed unsure themselves. Of course, this could vary depending on the specific branch and the employee you encounter, so it’s a good idea to try a few different places.

Required Documents and Process
The required documents were actually very simple, fewer than I expected. I’ve organized what you’ll need into a table for your reference:
| Document | Required? | Notes |
| Original Passport | Yes | The core identification document |
| Spanish Phone Number | Yes | For receiving verification codes and bank notifications |
| Proof of Address | Recommended | I used my temporary accommodation contract. The staff didn’t check it closely, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. |
| Proof of Funds Source | May be requested | A verbal explanation is usually sufficient, e.g., parental support, personal savings, etc. |
The entire process took about half an hour. The staff will make a copy of your passport and have you fill out some personal information forms, mainly for your name, address, and occupation. After that, you’ll set up your online banking and app passwords, and you’re all set! The physical card will be mailed to the address you provided within about a week. I received mine on the fourth day, which was quite efficient.
I hope my experience helps everyone! When you first arrive in Spain, you might encounter various problems, like with opening a bank account in Spain, but as long as you ask questions and keep trying, you’ll always find a solution. If you have any other experiences or have encountered any pitfalls during the process, feel free to share them in the comments below. Let’s help each other out! ¡Mucha suerte a todos!
