Friends who have recently arrived in Spain might encounter a common issue: the default limit on their bank card is too low! Whether it’s withdrawing from an ATM or making a transfer, it’s easy to get the “limit exceeded” notification. I recently ran into this problem when I had to pay a large sum for rent, and after doing some research, I’m here to share how to modify your bank card limits in Spain.
First, it’s important to understand that banks set these limits primarily for security reasons, to prevent huge losses if your card is stolen and used fraudulently. Therefore, the default limits are usually not very high. For example, with my BBVA account, the default daily ATM withdrawal limit is €600, and the online transfer limit is €3,000. This is sufficient for small daily transactions, but for larger expenses, you need to prepare in advance.
How to Adjust Your Bank Limits?
There are two main ways to adjust your limits: online via your bank’s app or website, as discussed in this guide on [Spanish bank transfers], or in person at a branch. In most cases, you can get it done online, which is very convenient.
Online via App/Web Banking
This is the quickest method, especially for managing your Spanish bank deposit limits. Almost all major banking apps allow you to change your limits yourself. The process is generally the same: Log in to the app -> find your card -> select “Options” or “Settings” -> find “Limit Management”. Here, you can set the daily, weekly, or monthly limits for ATM withdrawals, in-store purchases, and online transfers. The whole process takes less than two minutes, and the changes are usually effective immediately. However, please note that there is usually a maximum cap for online adjustments. If you need to raise the [Spanish transfer limits] to a very high amount, such as tens of thousands of euros, you will still need to visit a branch in person.

In-Person at a Bank Branch
If the limit you can set online isn’t high enough, or if you’re not comfortable using the app, just take your residence card (TIE/NIE) and go to your bank branch. Tell the staff, “Quiero aumentar el límite de mi tarjeta para una transferencia/retirada de efectivo” (I want to increase my card limit for a transfer/withdrawal), and they will help you. The advantage of doing it in person is that you can request a temporary high limit. For instance, if you need to make a large transfer today, you can ask for a high limit that is only effective for today. The limit will automatically revert afterward, which is more secure. The only downside is that you might have to wait in line for a while.
Below, I’ve compiled a table of common limit types and how to adjust them for your reference:
| Transaction Type | Default Limit | Primary Adjustment Method |
| ATM Withdrawal | €600 / day | App / Web Banking / Branch |
| Online Transfer | €3,000 - €6,000 / day | App / Web Banking / Branch |
| In-Store Card Purchase | €1,200 - €2,000 / day | App / Web Banking / Branch |
| Bizum | €500 / transaction, €1,200 / day | App / Web Banking only |
Don’t panic if you run into a limit issue; try your banking app first, as most problems can be solved there. I hope my experience helps you out! Have you ever been stuck in an awkward situation because of a card limit? Feel free to share and discuss in the comments below!
