Feeling a bit of a show drought lately, so I rewatched the global hit Spanish series ‘Money Heist’ from a few years back, and I have to say, it’s just as addictive as ever! I’m sure there are many fellow fans here in our community, so I’m starting this thread for us to discuss the show.
The first time I watched it, I was completely blown away by its thrilling plot and constant twists. A group of brilliant outlaws, led by ‘The Professor,’ plans an audacious heist. They don’t steal existing money—unlike typical bank robberies that might deal with things like stained banknotes—they print their own right inside the Royal Mint of Spain! The concept is just genius. Every character is incredibly distinct: Tokyo’s impulsiveness, Berlin’s mix of elegance and madness, Nairobi’s passion… Each has their own story and struggles. Who is your favorite character? I personally adore Berlin; even though he’s an antagonist, his charisma is off the charts!

This series is more than just a thrilling ride; it’s deeply infused with Spanish cultural elements. Take the iconic red jumpsuits and Salvador Dalí masks. Dalí was a leading figure of Spanish surrealism, and his work is full of absurdity and rebellion against authority. Using his mask as the symbol for the robbers during the heist at the Bank of Spain carries a powerful message of anti-establishment and defiance of norms. Then there’s the Italian song that runs through the series, ‘Bella Ciao’. Originally an anthem for the Italian partisans during WWII, it symbolizes resistance and the fight for freedom, making it a perfect fit for the show.
Character Codename & City
The show has a fun setup where each robber uses a world city as their codename. I’ve put together a list of the main characters and their actors. See if your favorite is here:
| Character Codename | Actor |
| El Profesor | Álvaro Morte |
| Tokio | Úrsula Corberó |
| Berlín | Pedro Alonso |
| Nairobi | Alba Flores |
| Río | Miguel Herrán |
| Denver | Jaime Lorente |
| Lisboa | Itziar Ituño |
Honestly, the global success of this show represents a peak moment for Spanish cultural export. My Spanish friends are incredibly proud whenever it’s mentioned. It has made people all over the world pay more attention to Spanish film and television. Have you seen any other great Spanish series? Feel free to leave recommendations and comments below. Let’s discover more hidden gems together! ¡Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao, Bella Ciao Ciao Ciao!
