Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve just been keeping my money in a current account, where the interest is so low it’s practically non-existent. It feels like my money isn’t working for me at all. I recently looked into the investment products offered by Spanish banks and found quite a few options. I’d like to share my findings on investing in BBVA here and welcome anyone with experience to join the discussion.
Overview of Bank Investment Products
Typically, when you visit a bank and speak with your personal advisor (gestor personal), they will recommend different products based on your risk tolerance. These generally range from the most conservative to the most aggressive and can be categorized as follows: fixed-term deposits, investment funds, stock trading, and pension plans.

Comparison of Common Products
For the average person, the most common options are likely investment funds and pension plans. I’ve created a simple table to compare the features of these common choices:
| Product Type | Risk Level | Liquidity | Potential Return | Tax Benefits |
| Fixed-Term Deposit | Very Low | Poor | Very Low | None |
| Investment Fund | Low-Medium to High | Good | Medium to High | None |
| Stock Trading | Very High | Excellent | Very High | None |
| Pension Plan | Low-Medium to High | Very Poor | Medium to High | Yes |
The advantage of investment funds is the low minimum investment and the fact that they are managed by professional fund managers, making them hassle-free. There’s a wide range of risk levels to choose from, including fixed-income, mixed, or equity-only funds. Of course, all investments carry risk—the higher the potential return, the greater the risk. Pension plans are primarily for retirement savings. Their biggest advantage is that annual contributions are deductible from personal income tax, but the downside is that the money cannot be withdrawn until you reach retirement age.
If you want to put your idle cash to work without taking on too much risk, starting with some lower-risk investment funds is a good idea. If you are familiar with the Spanish tax system and plan for long-term savings, a pension plan can be an excellent tax-saving tool. What investment products have you bought from your bank?
