Chatting with friends about banks recently, I was reminded of that magnificent building in the center of Madrid—the Bank of Spain. For many, the impression of it might be limited to exchanging pesetas or as the famous heist location from ‘Money Heist,’ but it actually has a lot to do with our daily lives, and some of its services are quite practical! So today, I’m writing this post to talk about what this ‘mysterious’ institution can really do for us.

Unhappy with Your Bank? File a Complaint Here!
Have you ever been charged unfair fees by your bank, been pushed into buying insurance you didn’t want, or experienced terrible customer service? I once had a mysterious management fee deducted from my account and spent ages arguing with the bank’s customer service to no avail. Later, I found out that you can file a claim directly with the complaints department of the Banco de España. Of course, the prerequisite is that you must have first filed a formal complaint with your own bank and waited for their response. Although the process can be a bit long, having an official channel like this is much better than fighting with the bank on your own. And the key thing is, it’s free of charge!
Check Your Credit Report
I think this feature is incredibly important! The Banco de España has a database called CIRBE, which records every individual’s debt information across all Spanish banks, including loans, credit card debt, and guarantees. If you want to apply for a mortgage, a car loan, or a high-limit credit card, the bank will definitely check this record. Therefore, it’s essential to know your credit status in advance. We can request our own CIRBE report for free to see exactly how much debt is under our name and check for any incorrect information. There are several ways to apply, but the most convenient is online using a digital certificate (certificado electrónico), which provides results almost instantly. Those without a digital certificate can also apply by mail or in person at the Madrid headquarters.
Common Types of Banking Issues
In addition to what’s mentioned above, I’ve compiled a list of common issues we might face that can be reported to the central bank. Sometimes, it’s necessary to stand your ground and argue your case!
| Issue Type | Common Situations |
| Comisiones Indebidas | Being charged for account maintenance, transfers, etc., without justification. |
| Cláusulas Abusivas | Unfair terms in contracts, such as “floor clauses” (cláusulas suelo) in loans. |
| Venta Cruzada | Being forced to buy other products, like insurance, when signing up for a service. |
| Falta de Información | The bank failing to provide clear and complete contract information before signing. |
The Banco de España is more than just a macroeconomic institution that prints money and manages the economy; the services it offers are very helpful for protecting our rights. You might not need them every day, but knowing about them can be crucial at the right moment. Do you have any strange experiences dealing with banks? Or have you ever requested a CIRBE report?
