Having recently arrived in Spain, I’m currently preparing materials for my residency renewal and have found that many places require proof of address. Besides the well-known town hall registration certificate (empadronamiento), a bank statement showing your address is also a very strong supporting document, especially if your empadronamiento is still being processed or has expired. Today, let’s talk about how to get this crucial bank document in Spain.
What Qualifies as a Bank Proof of Address?
First, let’s clarify that what we usually call a ‘bank proof of address’ actually comes in two common forms:
- Bank Statement (Extracto Bancario): This is your transaction history. It clearly shows your name, NIE number, home address, and recent account activity. Immigration offices typically require statements from the last 3 or 6 months. This document not only proves your address but also reflects your financial situation.
- Certificate of Account Ownership (Certificado de Titularidad): This is a more formal document specifically designed to prove that you are the holder of a particular bank account. It clearly lists your personal information, account details, and the address registered with the bank. Its main purpose is to certify that ‘this account is yours, and you live at this address.’
In practice, both are often interchangeable, depending on the requirements of the specific administrative body. Generally, if it’s just needed as a supplementary proof of address, a recent bank statement with your address on it will suffice.

How to Obtain This Document?
The process is actually quite simple, with two main channels: online and offline. The user interface may vary slightly from bank to bank, but the general process is very similar.
Online Methods
This is the most convenient and fastest method, available anytime, anywhere. Taking BBVA and Santander as examples:
- Via Mobile App or Online Banking: Log in to your account and look for a menu option like “Documentos”, “Mis Certificados”, or “Correspondencia”. Here, you can find your monthly statements. Select the months you need and download the PDF version directly. These PDF files usually come with the bank’s digital signature, making them fully legal and valid documents.
- Pros: Free, fast, and available for download 24/7.
- Cons: Requires a basic understanding of Spanish and familiarity with the app’s interface.
Offline Methods
If you’re not comfortable with online procedures or need a physical stamp from the bank, you can opt to go in person.
| Method | Pros | Cons |
| At the Bank Counter | You can get a document with the bank’s physical stamp, which feels more ‘official’; you can communicate your specific needs directly with the staff. | You might have to wait in line, and some banks may charge a fee for printing specific documents like a bank statement or a proof of transaction. |
| At a Bank ATM | Some advanced ATMs allow you to print recent transaction records or a simplified statement. | Limited functionality; they usually only print a simplified record which may not include your full address information and isn’t in a formal format. |
Personal Experience: When I was renewing my student residency, I simply downloaded the last three months of my bank statements as PDFs from the BBVA app, printed them, and submitted them without any issues. The immigration office mainly checks for your name, NIE, address, and regular account activity. So, don’t worry too much about the validity of the digital version, as long as the information is complete and clear. If you happen to encounter a particularly peculiar strict official who insists on a physical stamp, it’s not too late to make a trip to the bank branch. I hope this post helps anyone in need!
