Hi everyone, after just settling in Spain, one of the most stressful tasks has been opening a bank account. I visited several physical branches, only to face extremely long queues or very strict document requirements. Later, I discovered that many major banks now support opening accounts directly online, which is so much more convenient! I’d like to share some tips from my own research and experience.

Why Choose Online Banking?
The main reason is convenience and speed. I really didn’t want to take time off work just to stand in a long line at the bank again. Online banking typically offers several advantages:
- Saves Time and Effort: You can apply anytime, anywhere using your phone or computer, without needing to visit a physical branch.
- Clear Process: The instructions on the app or website are very clear, so you just need to follow the steps.
- Lower Fees: Many online accounts, especially those for young people, offer fee-waiver policies, which can save you a decent amount of money.
Comparison of Online Account Opening at Major Banks
I primarily looked into three of the most common banks in Spain: BBVA, Santander, and CaixaBank. They all offer dedicated online accounts, and while the application processes are largely similar, there are some subtle differences between these online banks in Spain.
| Bank | Account Name | Key Features | Best For |
| BBVA | Cuenta Online Sin Comisiones | Excellent app experience, comprehensive features, completely free account. | Young people who appreciate technology and a great user experience. |
| Santander | Cuenta Online Santander | World-class bank, many branches, convenient blend of online and offline services. | Those who want the security of a major bank and occasionally need in-person services. |
| CaixaBank | imagin | A fully mobile bank, strong social features, many promotions and discounts. | Students and young people who are trendy and look for consumer discounts. |
Basic Process and Documents for Opening an Account Online
Although each bank’s app interface is different, the core steps are quite similar. I’ll use my BBVA application as an example—the whole process took me less than 15 minutes.
- Prepare Your Documents: This is the most crucial step! You’ll typically need your NIE/TIE card, passport, a Spanish phone number, and proof of address (e.g., empadronamiento). Make sure your NIE/TIE is still valid!
- Download the App/Visit the Website: Search for the bank’s name in your app store and download the official application.
- Fill in Your Personal Information: Follow the prompts to enter your name, NIE number, date of birth, contact details, and address.
- Video Identification: This is the key step. You’ll need to be in a well-lit area to have a short video call with a bank representative through your phone’s camera. They will ask you to show your ID and answer a few simple questions to verify your identity. The process is quick, and they usually speak English.
- Sign the Contract: Once your identity is verified, the bank will send you a verification code via SMS. Entering this code serves as your digital signature on the account agreement.
After you’re done, the physical bank card will be mailed to your registered address in about a week. The whole process was much smoother than I expected. I hope this post helps anyone struggling with opening a bank account. Feel free to add your own experiences or ask questions in the comments!
