I just moved to Spain not long ago and recently went to the bank to print out a statement for some paperwork. When I got it, I was completely baffled by a long list of words like ingreso, adeudo, traspaso… While I could guess the meaning of some common Spanish banking terms, I was worried about misunderstanding them. I’m sure many newcomers face the same problem, so I’ve taken the time to compile the most common Spanish vocabulary found on bank statements. I hope this helps anyone who needs it!

Core Income & Expense Terms
These terms directly relate to whether money is entering or leaving your account, so they are the most important ones to understand first.
- Ingreso / Abono: Both terms mean money has come into your account, like a “deposit” or “credit.” For example, when your salary is paid or someone sends you money, you’ll see one of these. They’re the words you’ll be happy to see!
- Adeudo / Cargo / Recibo: These terms all signify a “debit” or “charge.” They are typically used for automatic payments, such as utility bills, internet fees, or gym memberships. When you see one of these, you’ll want to check what the payment was for.
- Transferencia: This one is straightforward—it means “transfer.” It’s often specified as either transferencia emitida (transfer sent) or transferencia recibida (transfer received).
- Traspaso: This is an interesting one. It specifically refers to a fund transfer between different accounts under your own name. For example, moving money from your current account to your savings account.
Other Common Terms and Summary Table
Besides the direct income and expense items above, statements also contain other useful information. For example, Comisión is a fee or commission charged by the bank for a service. Liquidación de intereses refers to the settlement of interest, usually the interest your deposits have earned. Reintegro en cajero or simply Cajero means you withdrew cash from an ATM.
To make it easier for you to reference, I’ve created a simple table. You can save it for quick look-ups:
| Spanish Term | English Meaning | Description |
| Saldo disponible | Available balance | The amount of money you can use immediately |
| Saldo contable | Ledger balance | The total balance, which may include pending transactions |
| Nómina | Salary / Payroll | Typically refers to your salary from an employer |
| Préstamo / Hipoteca | Loan / Mortgage | The amount you need to repay each month |
| Tarjeta de crédito/débito | Credit/debit card | Records of purchases made with your card |
Once you’ve mastered these terms, understanding your bank statement shouldn’t be a problem. Of course, the exact wording might vary slightly from bank to bank, but the core vocabulary is universal.
