Hi everyone, I was recently chatting with friends about banking, and it feels like Spanish banks have changed so rapidly in recent years. Before, you had to go to a branch and wait in long lines for almost everything, but now many tasks can be done with just a few taps on your phone. It got me thinking: what will our local banks, like CaixaBank, Santander, and BBVA, look like in another ten years? I’ll share my thoughts to get the ball rolling, and I’d love to hear yours too.
Digitalization is an Irreversible Trend
I’m sure everyone has noticed this. All the major banks are heavily promoting their apps, which are becoming more and more comprehensive. Transferring money, checking statements, buying investment products, and even applying for loans can mostly be done on your phone. I believe this trend will only accelerate in the next decade. Bank apps will become smarter, perhaps acting like a personal financial advisor that recommends products based on your spending habits or provides proactive alerts for unusual account activity. Instant transfer tools like Bizum will undoubtedly integrate more lifestyle features, such as paying utility bills or taxes directly, completely replacing the current direct debit (Domiciliación) system.

Will Physical Branches Disappear?
We’ve seen a visible decline in bank branches over the past few years, especially in smaller towns. My guess is that in ten years, city centers might still have some flagship ‘experience centers,’ but they won’t be as dense as they are now. These centers might no longer handle simple deposit and withdrawal services, focusing instead on complex advisory services like mortgages, investments, and insurance planning. Everyday transactions might be handled by more advanced ATMs or partnered convenience points. For young people accustomed to digital payments, this might not have a big impact, but it presents a significant challenge for the elderly.
The Convergence of Open Banking and Fintech
This concept might sound a bit technical, but it’s closely related to our daily lives. Simply put, banks will open up their data interfaces to third-party companies. For example, in the future, you might have an app where you can link all your accounts from Santander, BBVA, and Sabadell to manage all your money in one place. It could even analyze which credit card offers the best cashback for you. Similar applications already exist, and they will only become more common. Banks will no longer be the sole providers of financial services but will evolve into platforms offering a variety of financial products and services for us to choose from. This is a key evolution for Spanish banks.
I’ve put together a brief summary of the potential focus areas for the major banks, purely my own speculation, so feel free to discuss and add to it:
| Bank Name | Potential Future Focus |
| CaixaBank | Leveraging its large customer base to deepen the integration of local community services and digitalization. |
| Santander | Building on its international strengths to focus on cross-border payments and global wealth management. |
| BBVA | Continuing to act as a tech pioneer, becoming more aggressive in digital banking and Fintech investments. |
| Sabadell | Focusing on serving SME clients and providing more specialized corporate finance solutions. |
The bank of the future will be smarter, more open, and more ‘invisible.’ Those days of queuing at the bank might truly become a thing of the past. What do you all think? What changes in banking are you looking forward to or worried about? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
