Having just moved to Spain, I opened a Santander account on a friend’s recommendation and naturally downloaded their official app. Coming from back home where I was used to banking apps packed with tons of features, I didn’t have high expectations for Spanish banking apps at first. However, after using the Santander app for a while, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by some features and have also run into a few snags. Here’s a rundown of my experience.
Basic Features: Transfers and Inquiries
There’s not much to say here, as these are standard for any banking app. The login screen supports fingerprint and Face ID, which is convenient. Once you’re in, the main interface clearly displays your account balance and recent transactions, making it very intuitive. The transfer function is also straightforward: enter the IBAN and amount, and choose between a standard or an instant transfer. You can also filter your transaction history by date and amount, which is quite useful for someone like me who needs to keep track of expenses.

Key Highlights: Bizum and Online Customer Support
In my opinion, Bizum is the absolute soul of this app! It’s incredibly convenient for splitting bills with friends or making small transfers. Just enter their phone number and the amount, and the money arrives instantly, with no fees. This feature perfectly solves the common problem of not having cash for small payments. Additionally, their online customer support is worth mentioning. I once had an online payment fail, and I contacted support directly through the app’s chat feature. Although it was a text-based chat, the response was quick, and they helped me resolve the issue, saving me the hassle of a phone call or a trip to the bank.
Some Useful Little Features
Besides the features mentioned above, I’ve discovered a few other handy functions that are a bit more hidden:
- Cardless Withdrawal: You can generate a withdrawal code in the app and use it to get cash from a Santander ATM. It’s a lifesaver when you’ve forgotten your card.
- Expense Analysis: The app automatically categorizes your spending—like shopping, dining, and transport—and generates a chart. It gives you a clear picture of where your money is going. A must-have for big spenders!
- Card Activation/Locking: If you suspect your card is at risk or you’ve misplaced it, you can instantly turn it ‘off’ (‘Apagar’) or ‘block’ (‘Bloquear’) it in the app. Once you find it, you can turn it back ‘on’ (‘Encender’). It provides great peace of mind.
To give you a reference, here’s a quick summary of what I see as the pros and cons.
| Feature | Pros | Cons |
| UI Design | Clean layout, main features are easy to find | Can feel a bit laggy at times |
| Transfers | Simple to use, supports Bizum and instant transfers | Instant transfers come with an extra fee |
| Security | Fingerprint/Face ID login, can lock the card remotely | Verification steps for some operations can be a bit tedious compared to [Spanish virtual banks] |
| Extra Features | Cardless withdrawal and expense analysis are very useful | A few too many ads and investment product pushes |
Overall, the Santander app is more than sufficient for daily banking needs, and can even be used as one of the Spanish stock trading apps. The Bizum feature, in particular, is a game-changer. While it can be a bit sluggish at times, its strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. What do you think of the Santander app? Have you discovered any other great or frustrating features?
