Hello everyone, when I first arrived in Spain, I found the local banking regulations a bit overwhelming, especially when it came to withdrawing cash. Every time I tried to take out a larger amount from an ATM, the transaction would either be declined or I’d worry if I was doing something wrong. I’ve recently looked into it, and I’m sharing what I’ve learned to help anyone else facing the same confusion.

ATM Withdrawals: Convenient but Limited
Let’s start with the most common method: ATM withdrawals. In Spain, the single and daily withdrawal limits for ATMs vary from bank to bank. Generally, the default settings for most banks are:
- Single withdrawal limit: Typically around €600.
- Daily withdrawal limit: Usually between €1,000 and €2,000, depending on your bank and account type.
This amount is more than enough for daily expenses. However, this limit is adjustable! If you have a special need, like paying rent or buying a large item, you can request a temporary increase to your daily withdrawal limit through your bank’s app, online banking, or by visiting a branch in person. Just remember to apply in advance and don’t wait until the moment you need the money.
Counter Withdrawals: The Best Option for Large Amounts
If you need to withdraw a larger sum of cash, such as several thousand or even tens of thousands of euros, you must do it at a bank counter. There’s a very important rule here: under Spain’s anti-money laundering laws, for any cash transaction exceeding €1,000, the bank may ask you to declare the purpose of the funds, a process also relevant for Spanish bank transfers. This isn’t personal; it’s a legal requirement designed to prevent illicit financial activities.
Especially when you need to withdraw more than €3,000, it is highly recommended to make an appointment with your account manager or the bank branch one or two business days in advance. There are two main reasons for this:
- The branch may not have that much cash on hand.
- Communicating in advance allows them to prepare the necessary paperwork, saving you from long waits or repeated questioning at the counter.
Common Bank Limit Reference
I’ve put together a simple table listing the approximate ATM withdrawal limits for a few common banks. Please note that this is just a general guide; your specific limit will depend on your own account.
| Bank | Default Daily ATM Limit | Notes |
| Santander | €1,200 | Can be adjusted in the app |
| BBVA | €1,000 - €2,000 | Varies by account type |
| CaixaBank | €1,200 | Also supports online adjustment |
| Sabadell | €600 - €1,200 | New accounts may have a lower limit |
When living in Spain, the most secure method is to use ATMs for small amounts of cash and visit the counter for larger sums, always by appointment. Nowadays, cashless payments are very convenient, with most places accepting cards or mobile payments, so there’s less need to carry large amounts of cash. Safety first!
