Is it the ‘account freezing season’ in Spain again? It seems like many friends around me have been complaining about their accounts being frozen, and I never thought it would happen to me today! This morning, I tried to make a transfer using the BBVA app, only to get a pop-up saying my account access has been restricted. What a headache.

I’ve been using this account for several years, mainly for rent, utility bills, and daily card purchases. There are no large or suspicious transactions. Thinking it over, the only potential issue I can think of is that my NIE/TIE card is about to expire, but it hasn’t expired yet! Are banks being this ‘proactive’ now? Freezing accounts a month in advance? That’s outrageous.
Possible Reasons for Account Freezing
Based on my own situation and information I’ve seen elsewhere, I’ve summarized the possible reasons for recent account freezes. You can check them against your own situation and read more about bank account freezing:
Issues with Personal Identification Documents
This is the most common reason. Banks are required to periodically update customer identification information to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) regulations.
| Potential Document Issues | Recommended Action |
| Expired NIE/TIE residency card | Renew it at the police station as soon as possible. Once you have the new card or a return permit (Autorización de Regreso), update your information at the bank. |
| Expired passport | If you used your passport to open the account, you’ll need to update it when it expires. |
| Address on file at the bank doesn’t match your current proof of residence (empadronamiento). | After moving, take your new proof of residence to the bank to update your address promptly. |
Unusual Account Activity
Besides documentation, some unusual transactions can also trigger a freeze by the bank by activating the bank’s risk management system.
- Large cash deposits over a short period, especially from unexplained sources.
- Frequent transactions with accounts in high-risk regions.
- An account that has been dormant for a long time suddenly shows activity.
I’m planning to go to the bank branch this Monday with all my documents to get to the bottom of this. I’ve seen some people online say that you just need to update your documents and the account is unblocked quickly, but others say the process can be very complicated, even requiring proof of income. I hope I can resolve it smoothly! So exhausting. Has anyone else experienced something similar? How did you solve it? Please share your experiences to help others out!
