When I first arrived in Spain, opening a traditional bank account was quite a hassle—endless paperwork, appointments, and the efficiency… well, you know how it is. Recently, while chatting with friends about investing in cryptocurrencies, I found that traditional banks have many restrictions on deposits and withdrawals and could even flag your account. That led me to explore the increasingly popular digital banks in Spain. I’ve primarily used Revolut and N26, and they seem perfect for people like us who value efficiency and low costs. So, I’m starting this thread to share my thoughts and welcome everyone to join the discussion.
What Are Digital Banks?
Simply put, they are banks with no physical branches; all operations are handled through a mobile app. They typically offer extremely fast account opening, very low or even no fees, and modern features that are well-suited for a global lifestyle. For those of us who frequently need to exchange currencies or want to dip our toes into cryptocurrency investing, they are a game-changer. I started using them just to try it out, but now I rely on them for most of my daily spending.

Revolut vs. N26: My Personal Comparison
These two are currently the most popular digital banks in Spain, and I’ve opened accounts with both. I feel they each have their own strengths. Revolut is more like an all-in-one financial toolkit, while N26 focuses on being a pure, user-friendly modern bank account.
Feature and Fee Comparison
To make things clearer, I’ve created a simple table comparing some of the key points people care about most:
| Feature | Revolut | N26 |
| Account Opening | Phone number + ID | Phone number + ID |
| IBAN Account | Lithuanian IBAN, recently started offering Spanish IBANs | German or Spanish IBAN |
| Cryptocurrency | Direct in-app trading, wide variety | No direct trading, requires an external exchange |
| International Transfers | Low fees, fast service | Partners with Wise, transparent fees |
| Currency Exchange Limit | €1000/month free, fees apply thereafter | Uses Mastercard rate, no separate exchange feature |
| ATM Withdrawals | 5 withdrawals or €200/month free (whichever comes first) | 3 free domestic withdrawals per month in Spain |
From my personal experience, if you’re heavily into crypto, Revolut is the clear choice. The trading process is seamless, as convenient as trading stocks. However, its IBAN used to be Lithuanian, which some places might not accept. But recently, Revolut has been gradually switching existing users to Spanish IBANs (starting with ES), so this issue is being resolved. N26 is more conventional, providing a proper German or Spanish IBAN, making it perfectly suitable as a primary account for your salary or main banking. But you can’t use it to trade crypto directly.
Both of these digital banks are well worth trying. My current setup is using N26 as my primary account for receiving my salary and for daily direct debits, as it’s stable and compliant, reflecting the digital transformation of Spanish banks. Then, I use Revolut for currency exchange, cross-border payments, and managing my small crypto portfolio. This combination covers almost all my financial needs in Spain. The best part is, no more queuing at traditional banks, haha. I’m curious if anyone is using other digital banks like Bnext or Wise? Feel free to leave a comment and share your experience!
