I’ve just settled down in Spain and have some assets that need managing. I feel that regular retail banks don’t quite meet my needs, so I’ve started researching private banks here. It seems to be a more complex field than I thought, and I’d love to hear from experienced members on this forum. How did you choose your private bank?

My Initial Research
I’ve primarily looked into a few of the larger, homegrown Spanish banks. Being new here, I feel more comfortable with established local institutions. My focus has been on Santander Private Banking, BBVA Patrimonios, and CaixaBank Private Banking. These three are basically the giants in Spain, with extensive branch networks and a full range of products, which seems like a safe bet. But I’m not sure if they are the optimal choice, as large banks can sometimes lack personalized service due to their vast client base. I’ve heard their minimum investment is typically around €500,000, but I don’t know if that’s still the case.
First Impressions of a Few Banks
To make the discussion easier, I’ve put together a simple table with my initial thoughts on these banks, based on some preliminary research on Spanish private banking. The information might be incomplete or inaccurate, so please correct me or add your insights!
| Bank Name | My Impression | Rumors / Points of Concern |
| Santander | Highly international, with a broad global presence | Is the service too standardized? Do they understand the specific needs of expat clients? |
| BBVA | Strong in digitalization, great app experience | Are their investment products too conservative? How transparent are the fees? |
| CaixaBank | Deep local roots, largest branch network | Relationship managers seem to be older; could there be a communication gap? |
| Banca March | A family-owned bank, reportedly with excellent service | It’s relatively small. Does this mean fewer product options? How stable is it? |
Besides these major players, I’ve also heard about Banca March. It’s a family-owned bank founded in Mallorca that specializes in wealth management. I’ve been told their service is exceptional and relationship managers rarely change. This boutique approach is very appealing, but I’m concerned its smaller size might mean less resilience and fewer investment options compared to the larger banks. It’s a tough decision! I’m suffering from analysis paralysis.
So, I wanted to start a thread here about private banking in Spain to ask for your input, especially from those of you who have been living in Spain for a long time:
- Which private bank are you currently with or have you had experience with? How has it been?
- What is the service level and professionalism of the relationship managers like? Do they speak English? Have you found any managers who understand the specific needs of expats?
- In terms of fees and investment returns, does any bank particularly stand out or have hidden pitfalls?
I’m hoping to get the ball rolling on this discussion and provide some helpful insights for newcomers like myself. Thanks in advance for sharing!
