When you first move to Spain, you quickly realize that setting up a bank account involves a lot of paperwork. It gets even more complicated when you need to transfer money and are faced with a bunch of codes like IBAN, SWIFT, and BIC. It was all pretty overwhelming at first. Recently, a family member needed to send me money from back home to my Ibercaja account, so I took the opportunity to figure out all these codes. I’m sharing what I learned for anyone else facing the same confusion.

What Exactly Are IBAN and SWIFT/BIC?
Simply put, these two codes act like an ‘ID number’ for your bank account and an ‘address’ for the bank itself. They are mainly used for money transfers, especially international ones.
IBAN: International Bank Account Number. This is the unique identifier for your personal account. In Spain, it typically starts with ‘ES’ followed by 22 digits. You’ll need to provide this full IBAN for any domestic transfers within Spain or for setting up direct debits for utility bills.
SWIFT/BIC: Bank Identifier Code. This is the bank’s unique global code, used to identify a specific bank in the international financial network. If you’re receiving money from outside of Spain, you’ll need to give this code to the sender. For Ibercaja, this code is always the same.
How to Find Your Ibercaja IBAN?
Finding your full IBAN is actually quite simple. Here are a few ways:
- Bank App or Online Banking: Log in to your Ibercaja mobile banking app or online portal. You can usually find the full IBAN right on the account details page.
- Bank Statements: Your monthly electronic or paper bank statements will clearly show your IBAN at the top.
- Bank Card:
Some bank cards have it printed on them, but this is becoming less common. It’s best to confirm it through the app or online banking, as that’s the most reliable source.
What is the SWIFT/BIC Code for Ibercaja?
This one is much simpler. Unlike the IBAN, which is unique to each person, the SWIFT/BIC code is the same for all Ibercaja accounts. If you need to receive money from abroad for your Ibercaja account, you just need to provide the code below.
| Bank Name | SWIFT/BIC Code |
| Ibercaja Banco | IBERESMM |
Remember, when filling out information for an international transfer, in addition to this SWIFT code, you also need to provide your full name, your complete IBAN, and the bank’s address. The head office address for Ibercaja is Plaza de Basilio Paraíso, 2, 50008 Zaragoza, Spain. Providing this main address is usually sufficient.
