When you first arrive in Spain, you’re busy sorting out all the paperwork. The bank card is often the last thing to get, as you have to wait for your NIE. But who wants to run around to different physical stores for daily necessities when online shopping is so much more convenient? The big question is: how do you pay online without a bank card? I’m sure many newcomers have faced this same dilemma. After some exploring, I found there are actually quite a few ways around it, and I’m here to share them with you!
Payment Methods You Can Use Without a Bank Card
1. PayPal
This is probably the most familiar option. If you have a PayPal account from your home country linked to your credit card, you can use it on most Spanish websites that accept PayPal. The currency conversion is handled automatically, which is very convenient. When I first arrived, I relied on it for buying IKEA furniture and electronics on PC Componentes. The key is to have a functional credit card from home, a common alternative to specific Spanish online shopping bank cards.
2. Prepaid Debit Cards
These are a lifesaver! Highly recommended! Think of them as rechargeable gift cards. You can buy them in many places, like tobacco shops (estancos), at the checkout counters of large supermarkets, or directly at the post office (Correos). Simply purchase and top it up with cash to receive a physical card or a virtual card number with a Visa or Mastercard logo. You can then use it for online payments just like a regular bank card by entering the card number, expiration date, and CVV code. I got a Correos prepaid card; the process was incredibly simple with virtually no requirements.

3. Cash on Delivery (Contra Reembolso)
This option is becoming less common, but some traditional e-commerce sites or smaller websites may still offer it, especially if you’re trying to avoid issues like a frozen bank card. For example, Amazon supports cash on delivery for some items, but they charge an extra fee and you’ll need to have the exact amount of cash ready. It’s a viable option for small purchases if you have no other choice. Personally, I find it a bit inconvenient as I don’t always carry cash.
Here’s a quick summary of the pros and cons of each method to help you choose:
| Payment Method | Pros | Cons |
| PayPal | Convenient, fast, and seamless | Requires a Visa/Mastercard from your home country |
| Prepaid Card | Easy to get, secure | Requires cash to top up, some cards have fees |
| Cash on Delivery | No prior setup needed | Limited availability, has fees, requires exact cash |
Life can still be very convenient even before you get your local Spanish bank card. The prepaid card is definitely the best transitional solution to try first.
