Shortly after arriving in Spain, I realized that you can’t get anything done without a bank account. After looking around, I ended up opening an account with BBVA on a friend’s recommendation. At first, it seemed like a hassle, especially with the language barrier, but after using their online banking and app for a while, I’m a total convert! The features are quite comprehensive, and the user interface is intuitive. Today, I’m sharing my experience with BBVA’s online banking to help other newcomers who have just landed.
Registration and Login
When you open your account, the bank staff will help you set up an initial username and password. Usually, your username is your NIE number. The first time you log in to the website or app, the system will require you to change to a more secure password. Remember, it’s best to use a combination of letters and numbers and avoid anything too simple. The BBVA app is really well-made; after downloading it, you can use fingerprint or facial recognition to log in, which is much more convenient than typing your password every time. I highly recommend installing the app for daily tasks like checking your balance and making transfers.

Core Features Explained
Once you log in, the main interface is straightforward, clearly showing your account balance and recent transactions. The features I use most often are transfers, bill payments, and checking statements.
- Transfers: Whether you’re sending money to a friend for dinner or paying rent, just click on ‘Transfers’ (Transferencias). You only need to enter the recipient’s IBAN, name, and the amount. For domestic transfers within Spain, the money usually arrives the same or the next day, which is very fast. You can also save frequent contacts, so you don’t have to re-enter their IBAN every time—a fantastic feature!
- Bill Payments: Wondering what to do with your utility, internet, or phone bills? Simply use the app to scan the barcode on the bill. The amount and details are automatically recognized. Just tap to confirm the payment, and you’re done.
No more queuing at the bank to pay bills.
- Checking Statements: In the ‘My Bills’ (Mis recibos) section, all direct debits and paid bills are recorded. This allows you to clearly see your fixed monthly expenses, making it easier to budget and manage your spending.
Bizum, Spain’s Answer to Venmo/Zelle
When talking about BBVA, you have to mention Bizum! It’s an essential tool for young people in Spain. It links directly to your phone number and bank account, allowing you to make small transfers to friends just by entering their phone number. The transfers are instant and free! Whether you’re splitting a dinner bill or buying something at a flea market, paying with Bizum is incredibly convenient. You can find the Bizum option in the BBVA app to activate it. If you haven’t set it up yet, you should definitely give it a try.
