When I first came to Spain and needed to get my first bank card, many long-time expats recommended Banco Atlántico. At that time, it felt like their branches were everywhere, and their blue logo was quite recognizable. The bank seemed very friendly to us foreigners; the account opening process was relatively simple, and the staff were quite patient. I wonder how many people on this forum have used their services?

I later learned that Banco Atlántico actually had a long history, dating back to 1901. For a long time, it was a very important commercial bank in Spain, with a particularly strong presence in Catalonia and the Madrid region. But the business world is always changing. At the end of 2003, it was acquired by Banco Sabadell, and the Banco Atlántico brand gradually faded into history.
Changes After the Sabadell Acquisition
After the acquisition, the bank’s name was changed to SabadellAtlántico for a transitional period. Now, all branches, cards, and online systems have been fully integrated into the Sabadell system, using the unified Sabadell brand identity. If you were a customer of Banco Atlántico, your accounts and contracts were automatically transferred to Sabadell. In theory, there shouldn’t have been much impact, other than the change in the bank’s name.
Impact on Regular Customers
From my personal experience, the changes have been a mixed bag. The upside is that Sabadell is a larger bank with more branches and ATMs, and its online app and services are more modern. At the same time, I feel that the bank’s policies have become stricter, for instance, with higher account maintenance fees and stricter requirements for non-residents to open accounts. Does anyone else feel the same? Below, I’ve summarized some of the differences that a regular saver from the former Banco Atlántico might have noticed:
| Feature | Former Banco Atlántico Era | Current Banco Sabadell Era |
| Account Management | Policies were relatively flexible, easier to get fee waivers | More requirements, must meet deposit or linked-product conditions |
| Online Services | Basic, just enough to get by | Full-featured, the app experience is quite good for a Spanish bank |
| Branch Network | Already extensive | Even more extensive, especially in Sabadell’s traditional strongholds |
| International Services | Decent | Inherited and expanded; services like international transfers are more mature |
The disappearance of Banco Atlántico is quite nostalgic; it holds the memories of a generation of immigrants. Occasionally, when I pass by some of the old branch locations, I can still see a hint of its former self in the architectural style. Feel free to share your own stories. What experiences have you had with Banco Atlántico or the current Banco Sabadell? Did you run into any pitfalls when opening or closing an account?
