I haven’t been in Spain for long, and while I have public health coverage, the long waiting times for specialist appointments made me consider going to a private hospital. However, my private health insurance isn’t set up yet, so I was really curious about how expensive private healthcare actually is. After searching online and asking a few friends who have been, I’ve managed to put together a rough price list. I’m sharing it here for anyone on the forum who might need it, especially those who haven’t bought private insurance yet or have plans that don’t cover certain services, so you can have a general idea of the costs.
It’s important to note that this is just an approximate price range. The actual costs can vary significantly depending on the hospital’s location, reputation, the age of its equipment, and the doctor’s experience. For example, a Quirónsalud or HM Hospitales in downtown Madrid or Barcelona will certainly be more expensive than a private clinic in a smaller city. But overall, these figures are more or less accurate and can be used as a budget reference.

Reference for Common Service Fees
Below, I’ve organized the common services into a table for clarity. These are for basic consultations and tests. If you need surgery or hospitalization, the costs will be in a completely different league, which must be confirmed with the hospital based on your specific treatment plan.
Consultation and Examination Fees
| Service Category | Specific Service | Reference Price (€) |
| Outpatient Consultation | Standard Specialist Consultation | 80 - 150 |
| Emergency Room Visit | Standard ER Visit | 120 - 250 |
| Blood Test | Complete Blood Count & Basic Metabolic Panel | 60 - 200 |
| Urine Test | Urinalysis | 20 - 40 |
| Ultrasound | Abdominal Ultrasound | 100 - 180 |
| X-Ray | Chest X-Ray | 50 - 90 |
| CT Scan | Head CT Scan | 200 - 350 |
| MRI | Knee MRI | 280 - 500 |
All in all, private healthcare in Spain is definitely not cheap. For something as simple as a cold or fever, a trip to the emergency room plus a blood test and prescription can easily set you back €200-€300. And that’s before considering other treatments, from getting a wisdom tooth removed in Spain to physical therapy and massage in Spain. Therefore, having reliable private health insurance is essential, especially for expats like us living here long-term. It helps cover everything from major procedures to something as common as getting an injection in Spain. I’ve seen many other threads on the forum discussing insurance, so you might want to check those out. Consider this price list an ‘emergency’ guide, so that if you’re without insurance, you at least know what costs to expect and won’t be caught completely unprepared. I also welcome others to add to or correct this information
