I’ve seen many people on forums recently discussing the stress of renting, and it’s true, rents have skyrocketed in recent years. But don’t forget, the Spanish government offers a rental subsidy for young people. You can receive €250 per month for two consecutive years, which adds up to a significant amount! I successfully applied at the end of last year, so today I’m sharing my latest experience to help anyone who needs it.

Who Can Apply?
This subsidy is primarily for young people, so the [rental subsidy] has some strict requirements. You should check if you meet them first to avoid wasting your time. In short, remember these key points: age, income, and rental contract.
Basic Application Requirements
- Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old but under 35 at the time of application.
- Residency Requirement: You must have legal residency in Spain. This can be a work permit, student visa, etc., as long as it’s a valid legal status.
- Income Limit: This is crucial! Your annual income cannot exceed three times the IPREM (Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator). The IPREM for 2024 is €8,400 per year, so for the [Youth Rental Bonus], your annual income cannot be more than €25,200.
- Rental Contract: You must be a holder of the rental contract. This means your name must be on the agreement. If you’re sharing a flat, it’s fine as long as your name is on the contract.
- Property Ownership: You must not own any property in Spain. However, there are exceptions, for instance, if you cannot use a property you own due to circumstances like a divorce.
What Documents Do You Need to Prepare?
Preparing the documents is the most tedious part of the application process. I recommend getting everything ready in advance to submit at once and avoid any back and forth. The requirements may vary slightly between autonomous communities, but they are generally similar. The core documents are as follows:
| Document Name | Description |
| Identification | Copy of your NIE/TIE |
| Rental Contract | Full copy of the Contrato de arrendamiento |
| Proof of Residence | Certificado de empadronamiento colectivo (collective residence registration certificate) |
| Proof of Income | Vida laboral, payslips, or the previous year’s Renta tax return |
| Proof of Rent Payment | Bank transfer records or receipts from the last few months, proving you have paid your rent on time |
| Application Form | The official application form downloaded from the website of your autonomous community |
Special reminder: It’s best to have digital copies of all documents, as most autonomous communities now recommend or require online submission. Your proof of residence must be recent; it’s typically valid for 3 months and can be obtained on the spot from your local city hall (ayuntamiento).
How to Apply?
The application process is mostly done online, so you’ll need a digital certificate or a Cl@ve PIN. If you don’t have one yet, get one as soon as possible—it’s incredibly important for life in Spain! The application portal and opening dates vary by autonomous community, so you need to check the official website of your region. For example, the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, and Andalusia all have their own housing department websites. You can find them by searching Google for “Bono Alquiler Joven + [the name of your autonomous community]”. The process involves filling out the online form and uploading the documents mentioned above as attachments for the Youth Rental Bonus. After submitting, you will receive a confirmation receipt—be sure to save it! Then comes the long wait. The approval time can range from a few months to a year, so it’s a real test of patience. However, as long as your documents are complete and you meet the criteria, your application will most likely be approved. I hope everyone’s application goes smoothly and you receive the subsidy soon!
