Living in Madrid, it feels like this year’s heatwave arrived earlier and with more intensity. For those of us renting, where installing an AC unit isn’t an option, an electric fan is our only saving grace. I recently bought a new one, made a few mistakes along the way, and learned some lessons. I’m sharing them with my fellow renters in Spain, hoping to help you avoid the pitfalls and stay cool all summer!
When I first moved to Spain, I just bought the cheapest stand fan from a local bazar. It turned out to be as loud as a tractor with weak airflow that just circulated hot air—more of a placebo than anything. So, having learned my lesson, I decided to do some proper research this time. I looked at MediaMarkt, El Corte Inglés, and Amazon.es and discovered a surprising variety of options.
How to Choose Between Mainstream Fan Types?
I mainly compared the three most common types on the market: traditional stand fans, tower fans, and air circulator fans. In short:
- **Stand Fans **: The classic choice. Pros: powerful airflow and affordable. Cons: they take up a lot of space, are a hassle to clean, and the direct airflow can cause headaches after a while.
- **Tower Fans **: Stylish and space-saving, perfect for small apartments. They offer a gentler breeze and are quieter. Cons: the airflow is generally weaker than a similarly priced stand fan, and they are very difficult to clean thoroughly once dust builds up inside.
- **Air Circulator Fans **: Very popular in recent years, but also the most expensive. Instead of blowing directly at you, they circulate all the air in a room to create convection, cooling the entire space. They feel the most comfortable and are incredibly effective when used with an air conditioner. The only downside is… the price!

My Choice and Experience
Considering my rented piso isn’t very large, and as a light sleeper, I’m particularly sensitive to noise at night when looking for fans in Spain, I ultimately chose a Rowenta tower fan from Amazon. Although it was about €20 more than a standard stand fan, the increase in comfort was huge! On sleep mode at night, it’s virtually silent, and the breeze is gentle and pleasant. It also comes with a remote control for lazy operation, which gets a perfect score from me! Here’s a simple comparison I’ve put together based on my experience:
| Type | Pros | Cons | Price Range |
| Stand Fan | Powerful airflow, cheap | Bulky, noisy, uncomfortable direct draft | €20-€50 |
| Tower Fan | Space-saving, quiet, gentle breeze | Weaker airflow, hard to clean | €50-€100 |
| Circulator Fan | Whole-room cooling, comfortable | Expensive, needs a cool source | €70-€150+ |
If you’re on a tight budget and not sensitive to noise, a basic stand fan will do the job. However, if you value your quality of life and want a good night’s sleep, spending extra on a quality tower or circulator fan is absolutely worth it. I hope my little experience helps you out, and feel free to share your own go-to cooling gadgets! By the way, has anyone tried an evaporative cooler? How effective are they? Let’s discuss!
