Hi everyone, I recently moved to Spain and was shopping on Amazon. When I got to the checkout, I saw a field for something called NIF/CIF/NIE in the address section and was completely confused. After some research and asking friends, I’ve finally figured it out. I’m sharing this to help other newcomers who might be in the same boat.
This NIF/CIF/NIE is essentially Spain’s tax identification number. For individuals, you’ll mainly be dealing with either a NIF or a NIE. Simply put, here’s how they relate:
- NIF: This is the tax identification number for Spanish citizens, usually in the format of 8 digits followed by a letter.
- NIE: This is the identification number for foreigners in Spain, which also serves as our tax ID. Therefore, for most foreigners living and working in Spain, the number you should enter in Amazon’s tax ID field is your NIE
!

What is the Correct Format for a NIE?
This is the key point and where most errors occur. The standard NIE format is a letter, followed by 7 digits, and ending with another letter. For example: Y1234567X.
However, on Amazon or other websites, the required format can sometimes be different. This is a frequent question, similar to those about the Spanish ROI tax ID
. The most common problem is that the input box may not accept the initial letter. If entering the full NIE results in an error, try omitting the first letter and entering only the numbers and the final letter.
However, based on my experience and Amazon’s official instructions, the safest format is to enter the complete NIE number, including both the starting and ending letters. Most systems are now updated, so you can usually just copy and paste the NIE from your residence card. If your Spanish NIE tax ID is still not accepted, then you might be dealing with an outdated system that requires a special format.
Summary of Common Tax ID Types
To make it clearer, I’ve created a simple table summarizing the common types of identification/tax numbers in Spain, so you won’t get them mixed up anymore:
| Type | Full Name | Applicable to | Format Example |
| NIE | Número de Identidad de Extranjero | Foreigners residing in Spain | Y1234567X |
| NIF | Número de Identificación Fiscal | Spanish citizens | 12345678A |
| CIF | Código de Identificación Fiscal | Companies or legal entities | A12345678 |
For personal shopping on Amazon, just remember to use your NIE. Entering the correct tax ID not only ensures your invoice information is accurate but also helps avoid unnecessary order delays. I hope this little tip is helpful! If you’ve encountered any other weird formatting requirements, feel free to share and discuss them below!
