Hey everyone, are you running out of shows to watch again? When it comes to Spanish teen dramas, the first thing that probably comes to mind is the Netflix global hit, Élite. Good-looking cast, dramatic plotlines, and full-on suspense—it’s definitely addictive. But when it comes to Spanish university life
, there’s so much more than just Élite. Spain has produced many other fantastic school and university-themed series, each with its own unique style. Today, I’m here to share some of my personal hidden gems!
Hidden Gems: A Roundup of Spanish Series
1. Física o Química (Physics or Chemistry)
If Élite is a chronicle of the glamorous life at a private school, then Física o Química (or FoQ) is a more down-to-earth encyclopedia of public high school. This show is considered the trailblazer of Spanish teen dramas, predating Élite by many years. While the video quality might feel a bit dated, the depth and breadth of its storylines are anything but. It explores teacher-student relationships, friendship, romance, family, social issues, and more, with incredibly well-developed characters. Many of today’s famous Spanish actors, like Úrsula Corberó, got their start here! It’s an absolute classic and well worth your time.
2. Merlí

I can’t recommend this series enough! The protagonist is an incredibly charismatic philosophy teacher, Merlí, who uses the ideas of philosophers like Socrates and Nietzsche to guide his students through the trials and tribulations of adolescence. Each episode revolves around a philosophical theme, blending the lighthearted fun of a school drama with deep, thought-provoking insights. Learning a bit of philosophy while watching a TV show—how cool is that? The show was originally filmed in Catalan, but a Spanish-dubbed version is available, so it’s perfectly accessible. After watching, you’ll feel like you’ve become smarter… well, wiser!
3. Skam España
If you love stories that feel real, nuanced, and as if they’re happening right in your own world, then Skam España is definitely for you. It’s an adaptation of the phenomenal Norwegian series Skam, but it masterfully localizes the story for a Spanish context. Each season unfolds from the perspective of a different character, focusing on the real-life struggles of teenagers, including social media pressure, self-discovery, and mental health. The pace is unhurried, but it’s incredibly immersive. You’ll feel like you’re part of the group, laughing and crying right along with them. The Spanish is very colloquial and everyday, making it perfect for practicing your listening skills and learning authentic expressions.
To help you choose, here’s a quick comparison table:
| Series Title | Drama Level | Language Difficulty | Recommended For |
| Física o Química | ★★★★☆ | ★★★☆☆ | Classic ensemble, nostalgic |
| Merlí | ★★☆☆☆ | ★★★★☆ | Philosophical, heartwarming |
| Skam España | ★☆☆☆☆ | ★★★☆☆ | Realistic, colloquial Spanish |
| Élite | ★★★★★ | ★★★☆☆ | Suspenseful, eye candy |
Each of these shows has its own charm and offers a different window into the lives and culture of young people in Spain, as well as a glimpse into universities with a great campus vibe. What other great Spanish school dramas have you seen? Feel free to share and discuss in the comments
