Hey everyone, especially those new to Spain! I recently got my Beca from the Ministry of Education approved, and it saved me a ton of money—I’m so thrilled! I’ve seen a lot of questions about it on the forums, so I decided to put together a detailed guide to share with you all. Hope it helps!
What is the Beca MEC?
The Beca MEC stands for Beca del Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional, which is the grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Vocational Training. It’s the largest and most significant source of financial aid for university students in Spain. It generally covers tuition, living expenses, accommodation, and more. For international students, it’s an absolute must-apply opportunity
! As long as you have a legal Spanish residency and are enrolled in an official degree program, you are eligible to apply.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Requirements Explained
Eligibility is primarily based on two factors: academic performance and family financial status. For academics, undergraduate students need to have passed a certain percentage of their credits from the previous academic year. The requirements for Master’s students are slightly different, but generally, as long as you haven’t failed too many courses, you should be fine. Your financial situation is key to determining how much money you can receive. The government sets different income thresholds based on the number of family members and the total family income from the previous year. You can refer to the table below for specifics:
| Number of Family Members | Income Threshold 1 | Income Threshold 2 | Income Threshold 3 |
| 1 person | Approx. €8,843 | Approx. €13,898 | Approx. €15,033 |
| 2 people | Approx. €13,264 | Approx. €23,724 | Approx. €25,671 |
| 3 people | Approx. €17,685 | Approx. €32,201 | Approx. €34,845 |
| 4 people | Approx. €22,107 | Approx. €38,242 | Approx. €41,368 |
Simply put, if your annual family income is below Threshold 1, you’ll receive the maximum number of aid components and the highest amount. Below Threshold 2, you’ll get less, and below Threshold 3, you’ll likely only have your tuition fees covered. For us international students, the application typically only considers our own income in Spain, so most of us can meet the lower income thresholds.
How Much Money Can You Actually Get from the Beca?
The grant is divided into two main parts: a fixed amount and a variable amount. The fixed components include: 1. Tuition Fee Grant: This directly covers the registration fees for public universities. Almost everyone who meets the financial criteria gets this. 2. Income-linked Grant: If your family income is below Threshold 1, you can receive €1,700. 3. Residency Grant: If you need to rent accommodation away from your family home for your studies and your family income is below Threshold 2, you can receive one of the Spanish university grants
of €2,500. 4. Academic Excellence Grant: Reserved for top-performing students, ranging from €50 to €125. The variable amount isn’t fixed; it’s calculated by distributing the remaining portion of the national budget based on a weighted calculation of each applicant’s financial situation and academic record. It starts from a minimum of €60. Don’t expect to get rich from this, but it’s still some extra cash.
Application Process and Timeline
The application process is completely online and very convenient. The application window is typically open from early August to the end of September each year. Make sure to keep a close eye on the official Ministry of Education website for announcements! If you miss the deadline, you’ll have to wait another year! The application mainly involves filling out your personal information, family details, and financial status online. You’ll need to have your NIE, empadronamiento (residence registration certificate), and bank account details ready. The system automatically cross-references your information with the Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria) and Social Security, so be sure not to provide false information.
If you’re studying for an official Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Spain and have a low income, I highly recommend giving it a shot! The entire application process is free. With just a few clicks, you could save several thousand euros with these Spanish university student subsidies—so why not try? I hope this post has been helpful, and I wish you all success with your applications! Feel free to leave any questions in the comments below.
