Having recently moved to Spain, I’ve been chatting with friends about universities and realized what a headache choosing the right one can be. The internet is flooded with so many different rankings and descriptions that it’s easy to get overwhelmed. So, I decided to organize my recent research and share my personal take on what I consider the six best universities in Spain. This is purely my opinion, and I welcome everyone to discuss and add their thoughts!

A Tour of Spain’s Top Universities
1. Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)
UAB is one of Spain’s leading universities. It boasts a huge campus, almost like a small university town, with plenty of green spaces and a very strong academic atmosphere. Its overall strength is impressive, with many programs like Veterinary Medicine, Translation and Interpreting, and Sociology ranking among the best in the world. If you’re looking for an independent and vibrant learning environment, UAB is definitely worth considering.
2. University of Barcelona (UB)
The UB has a very long history, with its main campus located right in the heart of Barcelona, featuring beautiful Gothic architecture. As one of the most important public universities in Catalonia, it excels in traditional disciplines such as Medicine, Pharmacy, and Art History. Studying at UB means not only receiving a top-tier education but also fully experiencing the charm of Barcelona.
3. Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM)
Located in the beautiful northern suburbs of Madrid, UAM is one of Spain’s strongest universities in terms of research. Its Law and Economics faculties are top-tier, having produced many of Spain’s political and business leaders, including its alumnus, the current King Felipe VI. If you’re looking for a quiet, scholarly atmosphere, UAM is an excellent choice.
4. Complutense University of Madrid (UCM)
As one of the great Spanish universities, and one of the largest and oldest, UCM holds a significant position in Spain. Its range of subjects is incredibly comprehensive, with prestigious programs in Journalism, Fine Arts, and Literature. UCM has a very powerful alumni network and also has campuses in downtown Madrid, making life very convenient.
5. Pompeu Fabra University (UPF)
UPF is a very young, modern university that has grown rapidly, becoming a European leader, especially in Economics, Business, and Political Science. The university is highly international, with a teaching model that leans towards the Anglo-American system. Its various campuses are located near the beach or in the city center of Barcelona, offering a fantastic environment.
6. University of Navarra (UNAV)
This is the only private university on the list, but its quality should not be underestimated. UNAV is renowned for its high-quality, elite education, particularly in Business and Communication. Although the tuition is higher, the quality of teaching, facilities, and level of internationalization are all top-notch.
