Hello everyone! Shortly after arriving in Spain, I went to a local bar with some friends and was totally confused by the menu. It had Tapa, Ración, and Pincho—what do they all mean? I almost ordered one of each like I would back home, but I realized the table would be overflowing! Thankfully, after asking some local friends, I learned that there’s actually quite a bit to know. Today I’ll break it down for you so you don’t make the same mistakes I did!
Let’s start with the most common: Tapa. Simply put, it’s a “small portion” or snack that goes well with drinks. The servings are very small—sometimes just a few olives or a small piece of tortilla. In cities like Granada and León, when you order a drink, the bar will often give you a Tapa for free, which is amazing! In most other places, Tapas are ordered separately, but they’re inexpensive and perfect if you want to try a variety of foods. Pincho is quite similar to Tapa but usually comes skewered with a toothpick, and it’s often served atop a small slice of bread.
Take a look at the photo below: the bar counter is full of different Pinchos and Tapas—it’s enough to make anyone’s mouth water! Every time I have to choose, I get serious decision paralysis!

Here’s the key point, and the thing that’s easiest to mix up! If you want to have a proper meal rather than just a taste, then look for Ración. For example, if you’re interested in the spectacle of Spanish-style roast suckling pig and the plate-breaking tradition, Ración is what you need. Ración refers to a full-sized dish—enough to share with two or three people. If you order a Ración de calamares, you’ll get a big plateful. If your group is small or you want to try several dishes, opt for a Media Ración (half portion), which is about half the size of a Ración. Make sure not to mistake a Ración for a single-serving dish—otherwise, you’ll end up stuffed!
To make things clearer, here’s a simple table for you:
| Type | Portion Size | Best For |
| Tapa | Sampler/Small Dish | With drinks, tasting a variety of foods |
| Pincho | Bite-Sized | Quick snack while standing at the bar |
| Media Ración | Half Portion | 1-2 people sharing, or a single main |
| Ración | Full Portion | Shared among several, as a main course |
Besides these, there’s also Montadito, which is basically a mini sandwich and is another hugely popular snack. Hope this quick guide helps you! Next time you’re at a bar, you can order with confidence. Do you have anything to add? Or what’s your favorite Tapa? Feel free to share!
