Hey everyone! I’ve been a long-time lurker on these forums and noticed there are many posts about Madrid and Barcelona. Today, I wanted to share my experience in a less-known but incredibly charming place: the Cuenca campus of the University of Castile-La Mancha (UCLM), where I’m currently studying. I hope this can be a helpful reference for those choosing a university or who are curious about Cuenca.
A University Nestled in a World Heritage Site
The most unique thing about the Cuenca campus is its seamless integration with the historic city. Cuenca is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the old town built on a cliffside, offering breathtaking views. Our Faculty of Fine Arts is located right in the heart of the old town, next to the famous Hanging Houses (Casas Colgadas). Going to class every day feels like stepping back in time—it’s an amazing feeling!

Besides the renowned Fine Arts program, a flagship of the University of Cuenca in Spain, the Cuenca campus also offers degrees in Social Sciences, Humanities, and Journalism. The main campus area is in the new part of the city down the hill, featuring modern facilities and a great academic atmosphere. Compared to big cities like Madrid or Barcelona, life in Cuenca is much slower-paced. The upside is fewer distractions, allowing you to focus on your studies and creative work. For art students, the entire city is a source of inspiration. One of the biggest advantages is that the cost of living is genuinely low! Rent, food, and transport are significantly cheaper than in major cities.
Estimated Monthly Cost of Living
| Item | Monthly Cost |
| Student dorm / Single room in a shared flat | 180 - 250 € |
| Groceries (if cooking at home) | 150 - 200 € |
| Transportation | 0 - 20 € |
| Other (entertainment, miscellaneous) | 50 - 100 € |
Note: This is just a basic estimate. Your actual spending will depend on your personal habits.
A Few Tips for New Students
- Language: The locals in Cuenca primarily speak Spanish, and English proficiency isn’t high. It’s crucial to have a good foundation in Spanish before you arrive; it will make a huge difference in your daily life and studies.
- Finding Housing: You can find information through the university’s student services website or use apps like Idealista, but it’s always best to see places in person. Apartments in the old town have character but may have older facilities, which is something to consider when looking for a place near the university in the city of Cuenca, Spain. Housing in the new part of the city is generally more modern.
- Transportation: The city is very small, so you can get almost everywhere on foot. If you’re coming from Madrid, the AVE high-speed train is very convenient and takes just about an hour.
- Mindset: If you love a bustling nightlife and a cosmopolitan city vibe, Cuenca might feel a bit ‘provincial’ to you. But if you want to experience authentic Spanish small-town life and focus on your academic or artistic pursuits in peace, this place is an absolute hidden gem.
No more putting up with the noise of a big city
