Hey everyone! The September back-to-school season is just around the corner. Feeling excited, maybe a little nervous? Especially with all the confusing information online about the requirements. I’ve just chatted with friends from different universities and put together the latest info to help you out!
General Policy: Mostly Back to Normal
Good news: Most regions and universities in Spain have lifted the strict pandemic regulations. Unlike the last couple of years, there are no more frequent checks for vaccination certificates or mandatory masks. Things are pretty much back to how they were pre-pandemic, so we can all breathe a little easier. It’s great to see campuses bustling with activity again!

However, and this is important: specific requirements can still vary slightly from one university to another, as they mainly depend on the policies of each autonomous community. It’s always best to check your university’s official website or the emails they’ve sent you. I’ve put together a quick comparison on returning to Spanish universities for your reference:
| City/University | Main Policy | Notes |
| Complutense University of Madrid | No special health requirements | Non-EU students are advised to have valid insurance |
| University of Barcelona | No mandatory vaccination or testing | Follows the health guidelines of the Catalonia region |
| Polytechnic University of Valencia | In-person classes have fully resumed | Refer to emails from the International Office for official info |
| University of Salamanca | No restrictions | Standard registration and enrollment apply |
Special Notes for International Students
For those of us coming from abroad, the biggest challenge now isn’t the university’s health policies, but entering the country! Although Spain has relaxed its rules, we need to have all our departure and arrival documents in order. This includes a valid visa, the university’s letter of acceptance, proof of insurance, and so on. The old SpTH health form is no longer required, which certainly makes things easier.
Returning to campus this year is much less of a hassle than in previous years. The key is to get your standard documents sorted: visa, insurance, and accommodation. Campus life is pretty much back to its usual vibrant self, so you can fully enjoy your university experience in Spain! Have any of you received special notices from your university?
