Lately, I’ve seen a lot of questions from prospective students asking if Spanish universities, like those in their home countries, have mandatory physical fitness tests that you can fail and not be allowed to graduate. This question always makes me smile; it seems the stress of fitness tests back home has left a lasting impression! Today, I’m here to clear up this common concern.
Let me put your minds at ease: the vast majority of regular degree programs in Spain do not have mandatory physical fitness tests
! Whether you’re studying business, humanities, law, or STEM, the university won’t organize standardized physical exams, nor will they link them to your credits or graduation. So, if you’re not applying for a specific type of program, you can relax and enjoy the Spanish sun and tapas. Of course, staying active on your own is always a good idea!

However! There’s an exception to every rule. If you’re aiming to enroll in a sports-related major, the situation is completely different. The physical tests at Spanish universities
are a major hurdle for these programs. Spain’s sports science degree, officially called Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte (CAFYD), has extremely high physical fitness requirements for applicants. This is no joke; the entrance exam includes a series of rigorous physical tests with a very high failure rate. It’s arguably one of the most competitive fields in the Spanish university entrance system, so the idea that you can just waltz in is a definite no-go.
How Hard Are the CAFYD Physical Tests?
The specific tests and standards for the CAFYD program vary slightly between universities, but they generally cover aspects like speed, strength, endurance, and flexibility. To give you a clear idea, here’s a look at the test items from a previous year at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) as a reference for the level of difficulty:
| Test Item | Men’s Standard | Women’s Standard |
| 50-meter sprint | 6.8 seconds | 7.9 seconds |
| Standing long jump | 2.35 meters | 1.95 meters |
| 2000-meter run | 7 min 40 sec | 9 min 10 sec |
| 50-meter freestyle swim | 42 seconds | 48 seconds |
| Agility circuit test | 12.5 seconds | 14.5 seconds |
Feeling a bit weak in the knees after seeing that table? And those are just the ‘passing’ marks. To stand out among the many applicants, you’ll need to achieve much higher results. Each test is converted into points based on your performance, which are then factored into your overall admission score. So, regarding the Spanish university physical test items, if you are genuinely passionate about sports science and plan to make it your career, it’s time to start hitting the track and the gym just as hard as you hit the books! ¡Mucho ánimo
