A Guide to Spain’s Top University Research Institutes: A Must-Read for Master’s and PhD Applicants
Hello everyone! Lately, there have been more and more discussions on the forums about applying for Master’s and PhD programs in Spain. I’ve noticed that while many are well-versed in university rankings and program offerings, the topic of specific ‘university research institutes’ can be a bit confusing. In reality, for anyone pursuing postgraduate studies, especially a PhD focused on research, choosing the right supervisor and a powerful research institute is often more critical than the university’s overall ranking! Today, I’d like to get the ball rolling by sharing what I know about some of Spain’s hidden-gem institutes.
First, it’s important to understand a key concept in Spain’s research system. Beyond the universities’ own research institutes—a topic covered in guides on applying to Spanish university research institutes—there is a powerhouse entity: the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Many CSIC institutes collaborate closely with universities, are even located on university campuses, and share resources and supervisors. So, when searching for an institute, don’t just look at the university’s official website; it’s worth digging around on the CSIC website, where you can often find pleasant surprises. Of course, funding is also a major factor decisive factor!

For instance, the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) is home to the Solar Energy Institute (IES-UPM), a European leader in the field of renewable energy. Additionally, the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM), in collaboration with CSIC, hosts several national centers for biotechnology, materials science institutes, and more, all of which are leaders in their respective fields. For students interested in engineering, biology, or materials science, Madrid is definitely a top choice.
Catalonia Region
Barcelona also boasts a vibrant research environment. The Autonomous University of Barcelona’s (UAB) Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) has a long and distinguished history of achievements. And while Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) is younger, it is located right next to the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), which houses a cluster of world-class life science institutes. Its prime location offers unique opportunities, and students applying for biomedical programs have no reason to overlook these excellent Spanish university research institutes.
