Lately, I’ve seen a lot of forum posts about universities in Madrid and Barcelona, so today I’d like to switch things up and introduce a university I’m personally very fond of—the University of Zaragoza. Located in Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region, it’s a public university with an incredibly rich history dating back to 1542, boasting deep academic roots.

The oldest and most beautiful part of the University of Zaragoza is undoubtedly the Paraninfo building in the city center, which now serves as the main administrative building, library, and auditorium. With its classic, stately red brick facade, you can’t help but admire it every time you pass by. It’s also one of Zaragoza’s most iconic landmarks. Most undergraduate courses are held at the Plaza San Francisco Campus, which features plenty of green space, a strong academic atmosphere, and convenient facilities.

As a comprehensive university, the University of Zaragoza offers a wide range of subjects. Its science and engineering faculties are particularly strong, with programs in Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and various engineering fields holding a high reputation not just in Spain but across Europe. Additionally, its humanities and social sciences, such as Spanish Philology, History, and Law, are traditional areas of strength. You can’t talk about the university without talking about the city. Compared to Madrid and Barcelona, the cost of living in Zaragoza is so much more affordable! Whether it’s rent or daily expenses, the financial pressure is significantly lower. The city is just the right size—not too big, not too small—with convenient public transport and all the necessary amenities. The people here are also genuinely warm and friendly, making it a great place to focus on your studies and enjoy life. The only downside might be… the Cierzo wind in the winter can be really strong, haha.
