Recently, while helping my cousin research studying in Spain, I binge-browsed more than a dozen university websites, and my eyes almost glazed over. But in the process, I noticed something interesting: the official websites of Spanish universities are worlds apart in style, ranging from ‘classic academic’ to ‘modern avant-garde.’ Today, I want to chat about what I see as the ‘star pupils’ and the ‘specialized students’ among these university websites.
Some websites, as soon as you enter, immerse you in a dense atmosphere of academic tradition and history. The University of Salamanca, for instance, uses solemn color schemes and designs that convey a sense of rich heritage. On the other hand, universities like Pompeu Fabra University are brimming with modernity, featuring clean design, fast responsiveness, and exceptionally clear information categorization, resulting in an excellent user experience.

But at the end of the day, a good-looking website isn’t enough; the ease of finding information is what truly matters. For us international students, the core needs are simple: program and course information, application procedures, and contact details. Some university websites bury this key information so deep that it takes numerous clicks to find what you’re looking for—a truly discouraging design. An excellent website should provide the most prominent and direct navigation for prospective students right on the homepage, a characteristic of what one might call Exemplary Spanish Universities.
Based on my own experience, I’ve briefly summarized the performance of a few university websites in terms of information accessibility. Feel free to use this as a reference. Of course, this is just my personal opinion, and I welcome any additions!
Information Structure Comparison of a Few University Websites
| University Name | Clarity of Program Info | Accessibility of Application Guide | Mobile Experience |
| Complutense University of Madrid | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| University of Barcelona | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Pompeu Fabra University | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Autonomous University of Madrid | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ |
My Personal Conclusion
In my opinion, an ideal university website should be a combination of clear navigation + modern design + front-loaded key information. It’s not just the school’s online facade; it’s the first and most important portal for us to understand the institution and make our choice. Have you had any unique experiences while browsing university websites? Come and share which Spanish university website you think is the best-designed or the most difficult to use!
