The Royal Family Portrait: A Relatable Image and a Moment of Duty
On Friday, December 12, 2025, the Spanish Royal Family (La Familia Real) officially released this year’s Christmas and New Year’s card. The cover features a family photo of King Felipe VI (Felipe VI de España), Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía. The picture wasn’t taken in the Royal Palace but during the family’s visit to the town of Valdesoto in Asturias this past October. The visit was to present the town with the ‘Exemplary People of Asturias Award’ for its efforts in preserving tradition and living in harmony with nature. This event also marked the first time Princess Leonor presented the award in her capacity as heir to the throne since coming of age.
A Rare Reunion and the Card’s Message
This family portrait of the four is a rare sight in recent years. Princess Leonor is currently undergoing military training, while Infanta Sofía began her studies for a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations in Lisbon, Portugal, this September. Due to their demanding schedules, the sisters are often apart. The inside of the card contains the handwritten message, ‘Con todos nuestro afecto y los mejores deseos.’ (With all our affection and best wishes.), followed by the signatures of the King, Queen, and their two daughters.
A Separate Greeting from the King Emeritus
Meanwhile, King Emeritus Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía also released their own card. It features the message, ‘Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo 2026’ (Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year 2026!). The accompanying image is not of the couple, but of five pet dogs co-owned by the former and current King. Due to financial investigations, Juan Carlos I has resided in the Middle East for the past few years, while his pets remain in Madrid with Queen Sofía.
The Tradition and Evolution of Royal Greetings
Since King Felipe VI’s accession in 2014, the Christmas card has become an annual tradition for the Spanish Royal Family. In a departure from the formal portraits of the past, often taken in the palace or a church, recent cards have featured photos from scenes related to their official duties and public engagements. This change is seen as an effort by the monarchy to project a more modern and relatable image, demonstrating their connection to current events and the Spanish people.
