There have been a lot of discussions about public universities on the forum lately, so today I want to switch gears and talk about a well-known private university in Madrid: Alfonso X el Sabio University, or UAX for short. Are there any current students or alumni here? Let’s get a conversation going in the comments!
UAX actually has a pretty good reputation among locals in Spain, especially in the Health Sciences field. Programs like Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, and Physiotherapy are considered its flagship offerings. Founded in 1994, the university is relatively young but has grown rapidly and features modern facilities. Its main campus isn’t in downtown Madrid but in the nearby satellite town of Villanueva de la Cañada.
The campus environment is fantastic—it’s very modern with great green spaces, creating a quiet and ideal atmosphere for studying. It’s not as crowded as the universities in central Madrid. Here’s a picture of the campus to give you an idea.

Of course, the downside is that it’s a bit far from the city center, so commuting for leisure can take longer. However, the area around the campus and dorms is well-equipped with amenities, so it’s a great option for students who prefer a quieter environment.
Popular Majors & Application
Applying to UAX isn’t like public universities, which often heavily weigh national college entrance exam scores. UAX has its own entrance exams and interview process, focusing more on a student’s overall profile. But don’t assume that being private means it’s easy to get into; the days of just paying your way in are long gone. Competition for popular majors is quite fierce.
| Field of Study | Examples of Popular Majors | Application Notes |
| Health Sciences | Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Physiotherapy | Limited spots, apply early, interview required |
| Engineering & Architecture | Industrial Organization Engineering, Architecture | Practical focus, strong industry ties |
| Social Sciences & Law | Business Administration, Law | Many international programs, bilingual instruction available |
In terms of lifestyle, Villanueva de la Cañada is a university town, so there are plenty of housing options that are cheaper than in the city center. Overall, UAX is a private university that emphasizes practical skills, has excellent facilities, and holds a strong advantage in specific fields. The tuition is, of course, significantly higher than public universities, but if your family’s budget allows and you’re interested in one of its flagship programs, I think it’s well worth considering.
