The Founding and the Beginning of ‘Luck’
The history of the ‘Doña Manolita’ lottery administration began in 1904. Its founder, Manuela de Pablos (1879-1951), opened ‘Lottery Administration No. 67’ at the age of 25 on Calle Ancha in the San Bernardo neighborhood of Madrid. Initially, business was unremarkable, and for 22 long years, the shop never sold a major prize-winning ticket. The turning point came from a legendary tale: after a trip to Zaragoza, Manuela claimed to have been inspired by a vision of the Virgin of Pilar. The lottery tickets she sold based on the numbers that appeared in her mind reportedly won the grand prize of the Christmas lottery that year. This event quickly earned her and her shop a reputation for ‘luck,’ attracting a massive influx of customers.
Business Expansion and Brand Foundation
As her fame grew, Manuela relocated the shop in 1931 to one of Madrid’s most bustling central locations: number 31 on Gran Vía. Even during the turbulent period of the Spanish Civil War, which broke out in 1936, she persisted in keeping the business running. Known for her diligence and warm service, she often worked late into the night to serve the crowds who came to buy tickets after leaving the nearby theaters. This day-in, day-out dedication not only helped the shop survive difficult times but also forged ‘Doña Manolita’ into a household name. On May 7, 1951, Manuela passed away and was buried in the Almudena Cemetery, but the brand and the spirit of hard work she established lived on.

A Century of Legacy and Multiple Ownerships
Manuela de Pablos had no children, and her business was inherited by her sister, Carmen. Later, the shop was passed on to Carmen’s son, Alfredo Salgado. However, Salgado disappeared in 1987 after accumulating massive gambling debts. In the same year, the lottery administration was taken over by María Dolores Bermúdez de Castro, the Countess of Montealegre. About thirteen years later, ownership of the shop transferred to Juan Luis Castillejo y Bermúdez de Castro, the Count of Cabrillas. In 2011, to accommodate its growth, ‘Doña Manolita’ officially moved from its eighty-year home on Gran Vía to its current location at number 22 Calle del Carmen.
The Business Logic Behind the ‘Myth of Luck’
As of 2024, the ‘Doña Manolita’ lottery shop has sold the grand prize-winning ticket for the Christmas ‘El Gordo’ lottery 28 times, including portions of the winning numbers 72897 in 2020 and 88008 in 2023. Its astounding record of wins has made it one of the most famous lottery vendors in Spain. However, behind this so-called ‘myth of luck’ lies clear business logic. As one of the busiest and highest-selling lottery vendors among the more than 10,000 in Spain, its immense sales volume fundamentally increases the statistical probability of selling a winning ticket. The lifelong hard work of its founder, Manuela, ultimately built the business’s scale and legendary status.
