Woman in Tarragona Sparks Police Investigation After Requesting Cremation for Deceased Infant, Raising Suspicions
A Bizarre Request: Woman Arrives at Funeral Home with Deceased Infant
This Tuesday, in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, a 24-year-old woman walked into the Tarragona municipal funeral home (tanatorio municipal de Tarragona) carrying an infant with no vital signs. She made an unusual request to the staff: to arrange for the infant’s cremation.
According to the woman’s statement, the infant was her child, whom she had delivered alone at home four days earlier, but the baby was already deceased at birth. She explained that she was unable to report the situation and handle it properly sooner due to severe postpartum pain and discomfort.
Mounting Suspicions: Staff Promptly Alert Police
The woman’s statement and actions raised significant alarm among the funeral home staff. In Spain, handling a deceased person, especially an infant, requires strict adherence to legal and medical protocols, including a death certificate issued by a doctor. The woman could not provide any official documents, and her delay in addressing the situation was inconsistent with normal procedures, making the entire event highly suspicious.
Driven by suspicion about the nature of the event and respect for life, the funeral home staff, after speaking with the woman, decided to contact the police immediately. The Mossos d’Esquadra (the Catalan regional police) quickly arrived at the scene.
Police Intervention: Judicial Investigation Initiated
Upon arrival, officers conducted a preliminary interview with the woman to understand the basic situation. Considering she had recently given birth, the police promptly took her to a local hospital in Tarragona for a full medical evaluation and necessary physical examination.
Simultaneously, the Catalan police officially opened a criminal investigation into the matter. The primary task of the investigation is to clarify the true circumstances of the infant’s death and the veracity of the woman’s account. The police have secured the infant’s body and initiated the judicial process.
The Crucial Element: Autopsy to Determine Liability
Currently, the focus of the investigation is on the upcoming forensic autopsy. Medical examiners will use the professional autopsy to determine the infant’s exact time and cause of death. The autopsy results will be key to answering the core question of this case: was the infant stillborn as the woman claimed, or did the baby die from other causes after birth?
This finding will directly determine the nature of the case. If it is proven to be a natural stillbirth, the woman might only face issues of improper procedure. However, if the infant died after birth, the police will need to investigate further for potential negligence, manslaughter, or even homicide, in which case the woman could face serious criminal charges.
