Los Gigantes: A World-Class Cetacean Watching Hotspot
The Los Gigantes cliffs (Acantilado de los Gigantes) on the west coast of Tenerife, part of the municipality of Santiago del Teide, are an internationally recognized prime location for observing dolphins and whales. Although marine pollution and boat traffic pose challenges to cetacean watching, the stable populations here still offer visitors a high chance of spotting them in their natural habitat. Tourists can depart from the port on guided boat trips to experience the magic of these marine creatures up close.
Responsible Watching: Legal Regulations and Code of Conduct
To protect the precious marine ecosystem, Spain issued a Royal Decree in 2007 that strictly regulates whale and dolphin watching activities. The decree explicitly prohibits boats from approaching cetaceans within a 60-meter radius and strictly forbids feeding them or throwing any food or objects into the water, with penalties for violators. Furthermore, to preserve the fragile ecosystem of Los Gigantes, tourists must adhere to a series of conduct rules, including: not anchoring within 250 meters of the coast, reducing speed and avoiding congregation when boats approach the cliffs, not creating loud noises, and not littering on land or in the sea.
An Ecological Hotspot: Home to Fragile and Endangered Species
Los Gigantes is not just a haven for marine animals; its majestic cliffs are also one of the most concentrated areas for Spain’s endangered species. It is home to various rare plants and animals, including the Osprey (Águila Pescadora), the Barbary Falcon (Halcón Tagarote), Bulwer’s Petrel (Petrel de Bulwer), and the critically endangered Teno Giant Lizard (Lagarto Gigante de Teno). To protect these species, visitors are advised not to feed stray cats, as they are a primary predator of the Teno Giant Lizard.
A Year-Round Leisure Destination
Besides whale watching, Tenerife’s year-round spring-like climate makes it a perfect holiday destination. The southern coastline is dotted with excellent beaches, such as Playa de Las Vistas, while the Costa de Adeje is home to luxury hotels and boutiques. The northern part of the island also has its highlights, with the beaches of Puerto de la Cruz and the famous Lagos Martiánez seawater swimming pool complex offering diverse leisure options for visitors.
