Spanish Government Issues New Decree to Strengthen Family Support
On December 23, the Spanish government published Royal Decree-Law 16/2025 in the Official State Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado, BOE), confirming that from 2026, the child-rearing support measures for families with minor children will be extended and updated. This initiative aims to effectively reduce child poverty in Spain through direct financial aid, providing stability and predictability for tens of thousands of families.
Allowance Amounts and Age Brackets
This allowance is integrated into Spain’s Minimum Vital Income (Ingreso Mínimo Vital, IMV) system. The amount varies based on the age of the minor child, with the specific tiers as follows:
- Children under 3 years old: €115 per month.
- Children between 3 and 6 years old: €80.50 per month.
- Minors between 6 and 18 years old: €57.50 per month.
This per-child allowance provides families with a significant annual sum, directly helping to alleviate the financial pressures of raising children.
Eligibility Significantly Expanded
A key feature of the new decree is the expansion of eligible families. In addition to families already receiving the Minimum Vital Income (IMV), low-income working households whose income is slightly above the IMV threshold but still have limited resources will also qualify for this allowance. This adjustment broadens the social security net, allowing more families in need to benefit.
Application and Payment Process
To ensure administrative efficiency, the payment process has been streamlined. For families already receiving the IMV or existing family protection benefits, the Social Security administration will automatically process and issue this new child-rearing allowance without requiring a new application. Other eligible families will need to actively submit an application, providing documents that verify family composition and relevant annual income. The government aims to use transparent criteria to ensure citizens clearly understand their rights and that the welfare policy is implemented accurately.
