Lately, there seem to be more people on the forum asking about universities in the Galicia region, especially the University of Santiago de Compostela. I did a lot of research on this university when I was applying, so today I’m here to talk about USC’s rankings and strengths as a reference for future students.
When it comes to rankings, everyone is naturally most concerned about world university rankings like QS and ARWU. To be frank, USC’s overall ranking isn’t exceptionally high, usually fluctuating in the 600-800 range worldwide. But this doesn’t mean it’s not a good university! Most of Spain’s excellent public universities are in a similar position, and making it into the world’s top 1000 is already quite an achievement. For a public university with a long history and affordable tuition fees like USC is a university in Spain, this performance is quite solid, so there’s no need to worry about the ranking numbers.
Within Spain, USC’s reputation is much more prominent. It’s one of the oldest universities in Spain, with a history dating back to 1495 and a very rich cultural heritage. The entire city of Santiago de Compostela revolves around the university and the Camino de Santiago, creating a fantastic learning atmosphere. Walking through the old campus in Santiago feels like stepping back into the Middle Ages. Here’s a photo I took before, so you can get a feel for the atmosphere of the main campus square:

In national rankings within Spain, it often places in the top 10 or top 15, holding a high status, especially in fields like humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The local recognition for USC is very high, and its graduates have a great reputation.
When choosing a university, you can’t just look at the overall ranking; subject rankings are key. USC has several top-tier programs that are recognized globally. For example, its Pharmacy, Chemistry, Linguistics, and Agriculture & Forestry programs are very strong. I’ve put together a simple table listing some of its higher-ranked subjects in the QS World University Rankings by Subject:
USC’s Strongest Subjects for Reference
| Subject Area | Approximate World Ranking Range |
| Pharmacy & Pharmacology | 101-150 |
| Chemistry | 251-300 |
| Agriculture & Forestry | 251-300 |
| Linguistics | 251-300 |
| English Language & Literature | 301-350 |
If you’re looking for a cost-effective, scholarly, and culturally rich learning environment, especially considering USC’s tuition fees, then USC is definitely an excellent choice. Its overall ranking might not be as high as the top universities in Madrid or Barcelona, but in specific subject areas and in terms of its reputation within Spain, it is by no means inferior. It’s an especially great option for students who want to experience the unique culture of Galicia in northern Spain, as the cost of living here is also more affordable. If you have any questions about USC, or if there are any current students or alumni here, feel free to leave a comment and join the discussion!
